Me and a buddy went fishing this weekend in the Decade area...tried my usual spots, but conditions aren't right right now so they yielded no results.

Guy at the marina told us they were killing the spec in Mechant, but I am unfamiliar with the area (to an extent) and had never been in Mechant.

Long story short, I got a little brave and decided to head to Mechant through Raccourci and after multiple scares in <1.5' of water made it (followed all the other boats after making the mistake of going slightly right in Raccourci ).

We saw a ton of boats fishing the entrace of Raccourci Bayou (coming from Decade), what are people fishing for right there? I assumed red/drum since it gets really deep...but saw a lot of people fishing artificial (no carolina-type rigs).

Also, how do people normally fish the spec in Mechant? Same as Decade? Just drift around and throw live bait or swim baits? Seemed like most people were fishing the banks near Goose Bay.

Any tips for the area are appreciated! I need a good spot for this time of year. I've got winter and summer covered for the most part.

The mouth of Raccourci is one of the most popular spots in Mechant. Most people are fishing specs there. They aren't fishing the deep water, but the flats around it. The most popular method is tightlining Bayou Chub Minnows in Purple/Chartruese (Go Tigers!) or Avacado/Red Flake. Speckulizers are also popular if you prefer fishing under a cork. Troll the banks focusing on cuts, and the mouths of bayous, etc for specs and reds... If you can find them, Lo Deuce (Little Duece) and Deer Bayou are popular spots also. There is allegedly a sand bar in Mechant that holds a lot of trout, but I don't know where the hell it is. On the sister lake side, there are more oyster reefs that people focus on, but the methods are the same.

Watch and learn. There's a lot of different schools of trout swimming around that lake. North side usually has pretty water but I've caught trout all over the lake. Nothing to brag about size wise. Just like any other lake.. Fish the reefs, points and where canals dump into the lake. Be careful running into the lake from the raccourci... If u don't hit it right at low tide you'll smoke a reef

Yeah, we found that part too. That's why I've always been so hesitant to run out there. I've always known how to get to the Lake, just not how to run though since Raccourci is so shallow. Going into Raccourci I went maybe 10ft to the right of where I should have gone and ended up in about 1.5' or less of water...was almost bad. Did the same thing going into Mechant...hung just a tad bit too far to the right and hit the shallows. Don't know why don't they just dredge out a channel given all the boat traffic through there.

Everyone fishes the reefs right there

They are a big fan of the chartreuse sparkle beetle out there (split tail red dot)

That has been my struggle in Mechant. I don't know where the oysters are. I fish the sister lake side more often because it seems there are a lot more oysters (not sure if this is really the case or not) than in Mechant, which seems to have more of a mud bottom. It seems to me you have to cover a lot more water in Mechant to find fish, where as in Sister lake, you just bounce from reef to reef, and they're either there or they're not.

Good to know. We'd been having a lot of luck with these in Decade, just dip the tail in chartreuse dye and good to go.

Hopefully the trout are still there next time I get a chance to go to the camp.

I hate going through racourcci. I miss going through little deuce. Trout are all over mechant this time of year. I have caught plenty of trout over 20" in the spring. Find bait along the shoreline and throw some top dog jr or she dogs. When conditions are right you will load the boat with 18" and up fish.

I haven't fished since thanksgiving and can't wait to go next week. I will try mechant and probably work my way out to caillou bay.

Is there any other way? Raccourci is sketchy

I've been meaning to guy buy one of those Top Dog's and give it a whirl. My uncle swears by them, and he's caught some monster trout in his day.

I saw a 24' Champion with twin 115's on a trailer going down the bayou...thought it may have been you. Guess not haha.

It's always good whether you're fishing or cruising...though the recent dredging of the Cajun Bahama's put a kink in things...not nearly as much shallow swimming area as there once was.

There is another way into Mechant, it just takes a little longer. Go through Jug Lake and take a left instead of a right where you would take a right to head to Lost lake. That will put you through eagle lake and then through goose bay. Probably will cost you 20 minutes but save a potential headache.

Eagle Lake or Lake Pagie? Think I know what route you're talking about, looks like Pagie on google maps...though they are very likely to have it mislabeled.

Also, I fish in your canal all the time

And I think I may know who you are...or at least your cousins.

Why not just launch from Jugs and go South on the bayou? Once u hit the camps, mud lake is on your right and Mechant is just a bit further down.

We have a camp off of Bayou Dularge where we keep our boat...so we have to cross Decade to get anywhere.

Downshift: I don't know anyone's secret spots, trust me I can get around the area okay, but still learning where and how to fish in the area.
