I've been looking to get a handgun for a while and have been hesitant with small children ages 3 and 1. I'm familiar with guns, grew up with them, went through NRA hunter and gun safety courses, took concealed weapons course, etc... I have rifles in the home, but they are locked in cases out of reach with no ammo. The point of getting a handgun would be more for home defense so the having it locked away would help much if the worse case happens. I've also been looking to get a Glock 22, but maybe there are better options for my scenario. Maybe something with a trigger lock, etc...

Can anyone give me an real world tips, I've read through most standard gun safety tips, but we all know you can't be over prepared or cautious with firearms.

TIA

Can't remember the brand. But there are pistol safes that can be installed behind a headboard, under a night stand. Have a finger tip combination pad.

Looked at them at the sportsman show and fit a pistol very nice. I'm thinking about getting one.

And my next handgun will be a glock 19. Got a few revolvers already and never had a semi.

its really a double edged sword...
1. safety first
2. home protection, need to get to asap, preferably, within reach...

Thanks good idea, here is one I found with a quick search, will research these some more. Might be the perfect thing especially if you can use two fingerprints with it for me and the wife.

There are some that uses the fingerprints. Some just are a combination type. Look the same.

I would get the combination one. A sensor that reads you fingerprint may fail you if you are a little excited. JMO

I get your point, but I'd rather be safety first. If it takes an extra 5 seconds so be it, better than having to worry about my kids getting into it. Plus, if an intruder bust into my bedroom before we are awake it is probably to late anyway. I'm thinking one of these safes you just put your hand on and within seconds it should open, will have to research them more though.

True but a fingerprint is quicker. Plus it appears to have a key for a backup if it fails. Keep the key handy but out of the reach of kids just in case.

Takes about four seconds to open. Touch the buttons with your finger tips. Don't have to look. Not as quick as in a drawer by the bed but out of grasp of kids. Right now my gun is in the top cabinet in our bathroom. So I would have to get up and go get it.

Boats - thanks for the link, the video shows it open within a second or two and you can have up to 15 different fingerprints for different people or use different fingers

Looks liek they have a dealer in BR, may go check it out in person...

I saw a booth with a bunch at the sportsman show. Great ideas. And it seems like a good place to keep extra cash or something like that. Just mount it within a night stand somehow

The pic you posted looks like a combination one. You just press the buttons with your fingertips.

I looked at the biometric ones. Couldnt try it cause it wasn't programmed for me. Watched the guy do it and wasn't much quicker than the combination one.

Lock the pistol in the safe during the day, put it on the nightstand at night

I need to get one soon if I am going to. If not my kids will be grown and won't need it til grande kids come around.

Maybe I'll get one for me and the mrs for when we fight. Quickest draw wins

I applaud you for you safety concerns and acting in a responsible manner. When my sister and myself were younger my dad kept his .45 on his nightstand and my mom had her .357 on hers. Somehow they taught us to never, I mean NEVER touch them. It was also know that every rifle my dad owned was loaded.

I never once touched any gun without permission, except my own and I can guarantee you that neither did my sister. I have no idea how my parents instilled that in us but it worked. I do not recommend this practice by any means but those guns were safer in open sight than in a safe.

I know when I have kids mine will be locked up tight.

The one I posted is both, keypad fingertips and a fingerprint scanner. You can get them with either or though. I'd go straight biometric if I did.

I was raised the same way. My dad had loaded guns that were accessible if I wanted to get to them. I new from as early as I can remember that if I touched those guns without permission I would be in deep shite. I am by no means suggesting that he leaves it accessible. Just saying that it is a must that he start teaching now to never touch them even the 1 yr old. My daughters have been saying since they could speak. Daddy's gun, no touch right?

I agree. I was thought to never touch a gun unless given approval by adults. But when my kids have friends over they may not be as well trained as my kids. If it were only my kids I would just have it in my nightstand.
