All I can say, is this hurts us as fans as much as it does the Saints. We are as passionate about our team as any other. BUT IT HURTS MOSTLY BECAUSE OUR TEAM LET US DOWN. Our coaches, whom we've put on pedestals, for what they've given us. A rejuvinated spitirt in our Saints, a consistent team, and a Superbowl, let us down.

I can only be so mad with Roger Goodell. He's doing what the Saints forced him to do. We can spin theories why he hammered the Saint so hard. But that doesnt matter. Had Loomis, Payton, Vitt, or even Williams, done their jobs and heed the NFLs warning in the first place we probably wouldn't be dealing with this.

I will never stop being a Saints fan. I will move on from this. But right now, I'm just mad and hurt by them.

Your post sums up exactly how I feel. If they would have simply stopped the program when they were instructed to do so, my guess is the penalties would have been similar to the Patriots for the video infraction. After reading the NFL report, its very hard to make Goodell the scapegoat in this.

I agree, this is a classic case of self destruction

Very well said. The best I've read in two days in fact. I'm a Vikings fan. I have however, always liked the Saints. I also liked Sean Payton. His head coach when he was in college was the coach of a small college in Minnesota when I was there. I loved Sean in "The Boys of Summer" video.
After all this, I just lost a lot of respect for him. The blame has to lie squarely on the Saints organization for this one. Goodell was like the principal who suspends a kid for bringing a gun to school-he did what he had to do.

I agree with you. They definitely should have heeded the warnings. BUT I feel that these punishments hurt the fan base way more than it does the coaches and administration.

I'm not understanding this "tainted superbowl" crap. Making extra money to play football didn't give an unfair advantage.

The superbowl was won on the field. Not by how many envelopes got handed out off the field.

I do think the penalties are over the top as well. I hope there is an appeal. But again had they stopped when they were asked to stop.....

If Payton had just 'fessed up when he was confronted with it in the last month or two. But he didn't. Plus the Vicodin incident where he was given a "Mulligan". Maybe the penalties are a little harsh, but Payton can only blame himself.

The fines? No big deal. Loomis suspension? Not too bad.

The draft choices hurt, though. And I really am afraid of what we're going to see when the player penalties are announced.

Well if these initial penalties are any indicator, it seems as though the Saints will have a lot of new faces on defense. I'm really curious to see what happens to Vilma though.

I think it is more about perception, than anything else. They didn't have an advantage on the field, but the perception by many is that they did, because this was "cheating".

I think a lot of people are also missing what the true punishment is for. It isn't so much for having a bounty program, as it is that they did not stop it, when warned, and then lied about it.
