I'm looking for more info on becoming a high school official, baseball in particular. I searched the LHSAA site and found the person I need to contact. I plan on calling tomorrow but I was just curious of any experiences any of yall may of had. Is it something worth doing? Any downside? I'm really looking for pros/cons of doing it. I'm interested in learning more about the game and earning a little extra on the side. I realize it's too late for this season, but I'm just wanting to prepare for next season.

start a trend.

only call balls that are over the plate a strike.

show the players once at the beginning of the game how low your strike zone is, even if it is not the legal location.

Have you called baseball at all before?

I would suggest getting some experience with some lower leagues first. There is plenty of USSSA and summer ball to call this year.

Never called a game that meant anything. Just a couple of charity games. Ive got a friend at work that calls usssa games on the weekends and he's gonna get me to do a few tourneys with him this summer.

LHSAA baseball umpire scoop:
the games start early so you have to have a schedule that will allow you to be in a ballpark by 3:30

the games can be slow

the uniform is hot as hell - they wear a black shirt and black hat when it is 90+F

even though you will be registered with the LHSAA you will start out doing mostly junior high baseball and the know it all parents and shitty coaches will make you want to quit

a word of advice: if you want to work LHSAA go to fast pitch softball. the games rarely last more than an hour, damn near every game has at least one team with a stud pitcher that just strikes everybody out. Nobody has lights on their field so they play at 3:30 and you will usually be walking to your car for 4:45. LHSAA fast pitch umps make the same game fee as baseball umps and you will leaving the ballpark while the baseball game is barely halfway done

ETA: almost forgot. Not as many Junior highs have softball so you dont have to work as much junior high softball as you would baseball. You work LHSAA fast pitch and you can also work travel/select tournaments on the weekends and make some major cash. Because the softball games take half as long as baseball games they usually work twice as many games on a frid/sat/sunday tourney schedule.

good luck

I agree with what he said, especially if all you're after is a quick buck. There are way too many baseball umpires out there who just want to get the game over with no matter how shitty they work.

Please don't bother with baseball unless you care for the game. Thanks.
