My wife and I decided to go eat at a Chinese restaurant that is her favorite go to place for Oriental food today, for dinner. We've been going to this place for four years now, and the owners, who are from China, know us. This place is in Wetumpka (a burb of Montgomery) and they serve decent food. The owners are three women, who also wait on tables. Whenever I go out to eat, I always leave a large tip because I firmly believe that people who wait on tables, work their asses off. Our bill came to thirty-one dollars and fifteen cents. I left a twenty dollar tip. While we were being rung up, the other owner rushed up to the cashier and said in her Oriental accent, " No no, bill is wrong, bill thirty-one dollar sixteen cent. We were charged the extra penny. I told my wife that I'll never go back to that place ever again and if she likes it so much, she can go alone or call for a carry out. If I would have thought about it, I would have gone back to the table and picked up my twenty and left a quarter. Chances are she picked up the tip before she came to the register. That place will never see me again plus my wife didn't respond to my bitching. There is a new China restaurant that just opened here out of Atlanta. The name of it is Chin Chin and it's got nothing but rave reviews out of Atlanta. That penny pinching place that we went to today, will never see me again. Am I wrong for feeling this way?

I would have been mad as well, but I also would not have left a $20 tip on a $31 ticket unless the waitress promised me a rub and tug tomorrow at lunch when the wife had other plans.

How were you able to even navigate to this website? That grammar is horrid.

And you don't call people "Oriental people" unless you want to massively offend someone.

What do you call them? Are they not from the Orient? Serious question. Asians perhaps? What is the correct PC term these days. I had no idea Oriental was derrogatory.

Orient Express?

Asian is correct. I couldn't tell you why it's offensive, as I'm not Asian, but I know that I've seen plenty of people flip out when someone says "Oriental people."

quote:

While a small number of reference works used in the United States describe Oriental as pejorative, or antiquated but not necessarily offensive, the American Heritage Book of English Usage notes that:
It is worth remembering, though, that Oriental is not an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. It is most objectionable in contemporary contexts and when used as a noun, as in the appointment of an Oriental to head the commission. But in certain historical contexts, or when its exotic connotations are integral to the topic, Oriental remains a useful term.[7]
Random House's Guide to Sensitive Language states that "Other words (e.g., Oriental, colored) are outdated or inaccurate." It suggests the use of "Asian or more specific designation such as Pacific Islander, Chinese American, [or] Korean".[8] Merriam-Webster describes the term as "sometimes offensive."[9]
[edit]

It's not like saying the n-word, but it's still considered offensive and not the brightest term to use when describing people. Oriental [object] is okay, but not Oriental person.

I just picture some redneck in their trailer park referring to "dem oriental people"

Holyfrick. You mean to tell me there is a politically correct way to call ever race known to man? Godforbid someone hurt someone else's feelings. There are 2 billion of the said Oriental people, which is 50% of the earth's population.

In lehman's terms, they are not a minority in any capacity and society shouldn't have to walk around on egg shells when discussing the orientals.

Chill the heck out, kiddo. I couldn't care less what you call an Asian person Doesn't change that "oriental" people is often offensive to others. I was just letting the dude know. By all means continue to say it for all I care.

Orient means the East a directional term of the maps of the world made by Western Europeans a few hundred years ago, not a racial term. Now go take a look at the world if you invert your globe for a minute, and realize that the sizes are very far off by the cartographers, and watch the wonderment. Then go take a look at it and look at the land masses of all of the continents in comparison to that of Africa. All of them combined will fit on it.

I know what Orient means, and I said myself I don't understand the slur. As far as I can see with ALL slurs, they're silly to get up in arms over. Words are words.

That being said, I was simply pointing out that saying oriental people has been considered offensive. I would personally not say it to describe a group of people in a public setting just because I know how it is perceived.
