With this guy in it makes me think that dropping or a new cheaper deal for Ellis is on the table.
Same thing with Lofton related to Vilma too.
Ya never know how these things pan out but it's nice to see they aren't sitting on their hands. Considering the current cap situation the prospects of what might be look pretty damn good.
Rumbles are that ATL fans are kinda antsy that they aren't moving on players/needs. That prolly is true when they sign someone and as a divisional opponent you approve. They were looking for some more pass rush... they re-signed Abraham. I don't mind that one bit. He has been good but age looks to be catching up with him. It also seems an increasing number of his sacks are of the garbage variety rather than high impact plays (3.5 vs. Jax in '11).

Well Ellis is in the final year of his rookie contract right? They need to figure out something with him. His cap # is too high.
To me the FO of the Falcons seem very reactionary. Last year they made big moves and it back fired in their faces. This year they seem like they're being much safer. Granted it's still early, but I haven't even heard of them bringing in anyone of significance for a visit.

I agree with this 100%

Deffnitly. This offseason is definitely starting to turn around. I think most of us knew Loomis and the FO would taker care of business, its just nice to finally see them doing it. I thought the FA would never get here.

I wanna see him stay. I've liked him since he sacked the shite out of Aaron Rogers his rookie year in the Dome. I'm subscribing to the "victims of the scheme" mentality. I really wanna see him play under Spags, not get cut. I know he is a little expensive but he has flashes of greatness and Id hate to see him leave the team and become great.

Said it before but Ellis might be the biggest question mark on the team to me. In 2010 he looked liked "Oh yeah, this is what we drafted him for." Last year he disappeared. Sometimes there are undisclosed injuries that lower production. I've wondered that on him. So it comes down to their evaluation. There are three paths:
-admit he flopped, cut bait, save cap space, and move on to the next plan
-let him play out his final year, contract years are the "show me/show you" years. Let his future bear whatever he does in 2012.
-if you believe in him being a vital cog going forward then renegotiate and extend
---------------
dirty birds are bringing in Marcus McNeil. :( Seems like they are letting McClure walk too. I'd say their O Line is still very precarious. Love dat.

This is prob the best option. He knows its a contract year and he has a new DC. Let him play his heart out. If he plays well then give him a contract. If by week 5 he isn't performing at all, maybe trade him before the season even ends. I just personally like the kid and I wanna see him do well. I'm excited to see what Spags does with our D this season

The only draw back to doing that is his cap number is high, and we need some space.

Yeah thats the biggest problem. But if we let him stay and he performs amazingly this season, it'll be worth it. I think he has the ability to be one of the greats, just didnt have the right coach. I dont know, my 2 cents, he should stay

Maybe they could give him a new contract that would kick in more money next year IF he bounces back. If not they can part ways and he could find another team. That's probably not realistic, but I just have a hard time believing he's gonna play this year under his current contract.

Me too. But a guy can dream

As said we really can't see behind the scenes and what goes into such a decision. If his 2010 6.5 sacks and impressive play is really the guy then extending is no prob. I truly hope that is the case.
Players have to make the plays. I know good scheme/figured out scheme can only go so far. Still, something in me sez the level of talent on this D was not utilized properly or to full extent. I'll say Harper was about as good as he can be under GW. I liked his development and role for PRob. Otherwise I dunno. How much of a playmaker can Jenkins be playing 30yds off the ball so much? Wilson & Casillas show some skills but not in play enough. How come Rogers and Franklin were both so underused? Ya gotta get enough reps in to have the opportunity to make big plays. I know Galette has been raw but dammit ya gotta get someone with some outside speed to bring pressue.

Jenkins
Hands down my favorite player on the D. And has been since he took over at FS. He suffered the most under GW. He came in so strong playing CB his rookie year then he moved to FS with a ton of promise and fell victim to a horrible scheme. As good as he has been i dont think we've seen a glimpse of this guys talent yet. He was constantly watching like 3 receivers at a time, playing way off the ball, covering for blitzing corners, etc... And he still looked good on a daily basis. I am really looking forward to seeing a new DC and his scheme. If we play some intelligent coverage with our CBs and our front 7 gets some legit pressure on the QB. Jenkins may be one of the top 3 Safteys in the league in multiple categories.

pain and simple guys, we need a dominant player next to ellis instead of these washed up players that we sign each year that we put next to him. will smith is a bit slower but he's not ever going to be the great pass rusher or is cam jordan,in order for those three to be successful, you have a great force on the inside next to ellis. that player would have to command double teams. we don't have that and thats why these other players can't get to the qb's. thats also why you see us put so many blitzpackages in every game.

You dont think he can be a great pass rusher? Id o agree though. We need a dmoinant middle force. I guess I'm just hoping Big Sed can fill that role. He gets double teamed more than you think.
5 Passes Deflected. 1 sack in his rookie season. I can remember atleast 3 sacks called back for bullshite "he hit the QB to hard" penalties. I think hes got the possibility to get to QBs more than you think.
