As a true freshman in 2010, Mathieu played in all 13 games with one start.

He finished the season with 59 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions.

He was the Outstanding Defensive Player of the 2011 Cotton Bowl Classic after he recorded seven tackles, one tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one interception, one sack and one pass breakup.

At the end of the 2011 regular season, Mathieu had 71 total tackles (54 solo and 17 assists), 1.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles (2 returned for a touchdown), and 2 interceptions.

On special teams, Mathieu had 26 punt returns for 420 yards, with 2 returned for a touchdown.

Just 25 games into his career, Mathieu has already shattered the LSU record and tied the Southeastern Conference record with 12 forced fumbles.

His six forced fumbles this season matched his own single-season record set last year (from LSUsports.net).

And that's just through his sophomore season.

If he comes back for an encore of his 2011 performance, I would be compelled to put him with Billy Cannon among the greatest football players at LSU, maybe even surpass.

Tyrann Mathieu is truly one of the most special players I have ever witnessed anywhere.

I just hope other LSU fans don't take him for granted.

For me to put him over Billy Cannon, he would have to win Heisman and dont know if the dope smoking incident will allow him to get it.....
He is a great player though, deff. #2.

This 'dope' smoking incident will not have any bearing on him winning heisman 2012. First of all it is a separate season, so it shouldn't be involved at all. Second, if the Heisman can induct Cam Newton with all the stuff flying around about him accepting money, they surely can accept Honey Badger.

I think if he repeats 2011 he will be the best defender.

You can't really compare him to any other player because I don't think LSU has ever had a player like him. He's not a pure cover corner like PP7 or Mo. He's a free lancer like Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed.

Best play maker in lsu history? Sure

Best player? No chance, he is pretty average in coverage. I think he is important to have on the field, but not the best every down/ situation player.

I think Casanova was a three time All-American at DB when players were only allowed to play three seasons. So, he may not even be the best player ever in LSU's defensive backfield.

Absolutely! If Tyrann can handle the hype/pressure that will be on him next season then I see him putting up better numbers than he had in the two previous seasons.

I'm calling him a pure football player.

And he is already at an elite level among the Tiger greats.

He's not the best defensive back, much less best player.
For those who cite his overall play and punt returns, see "Cassanova, Tommy".
The difference is that Cassanova never played for an undefeated team ranked No. 1 in the nation week after week.

Exactly what I was going to say. His career could end tomorrow and he'd still be considered the best playmaker, but there's been 20+, probably more, that I can name that are more effective than him in coverage

Oh yes show me a picture of one play in coverage against a pretty bad florids team and I will be impressed.

Even Hookfin made some good plays, but was below average in coverage

I don't expect you to change your mind but to say he is average in coverage is absurd IMO.

I'm not saying he's elite either in coverage.
