Certain parts are taken straight from the books. Other characters are pulled from the later books and shoehorned into the first story.
Some changes which I saw as improvements. Some of the characters may seem a bit updated.
The feel of the books is certainly there.

For those who have seen it, did you see it in 2d, 3d or Imax 3d?
We went and saw it last night in Imax 3D, and while I really enjoyed the movie overall, I thought the 3D didn't add anything.
I will be taking my son to see it soon (didn't know if it was scary; he's 10), and will not be wasting the extra money on 3D. So my vote is if you go see it, the 2D is sufficient.

I took my 10 year old and he was fine with it. I feel like I am over protective at times and I saw nothing really wrong with this for a 10 year old.

Yeah, neither did I. But I made the mistake last summer by bringing him with me to go see Cowboys and Aliens thinking he would enjoy it.
Scary aliens = sleepless nights

Usually the case. I don't find that 3D adds much to most movies it is used in. I pretty much always see the 2D version of films if available. Saw this one in 2D of course.

My wife didn't know word one about John Carter of Mars, she loved the movie.
A guy in the audience said in a loud voice (during the credits), "Why do the critics hate this? It was awesome!"
So much better than Avatar. The Tharks were so much more "real" than the Navi.
And Woola kicked arse.
Exactly. Great movie. Nice feel. Very "classic" feeling, not in the sense of quality, but in the sense of execution. It worked well.

my question is, are the people who liked this movie also the people who liked the trailers??
because the trailers are still a huge turn off for me. It's hard to believe this movie is anything but a waste of money

Na. The trailers were very very blah. I was worried when I saw them actually.

It just depends on your approach really, and how much you enjoy the kind of kind of goofy naivete of classic adventure films.

Not at all.. In fact I think the trailers do an injustice to the movie. They really don't give you a reason to go see the movie.

I'm going to be yet another person coming on board this thread to say that it's a good movie.
The trailers really didn't sell the movie very well at all. We're so used to CGI crapfests that the trailers made this look like yet another one.
Interestingly enough, the CGI use in this movie was central to pulling off the story and it was well-executed.
I found John Carter's backstory very interesting, as well as the Thrak culture and presentation. I really enjoyed James Purefoy's small role in the movie... he was great in it. The bad guys are kind of interesting without being overtly mwhahahahaha. You feel sympathy for certain characters like Sola, the Thrak girl who can't do anything right, despite her attempts.
The story holds up for the most part. I think its weak points are that the conflict between the two human cities on Mars seemed kind of empty and lacking in context... and the human bad guy wasn't very interesting to me.
That's all I got, folks. This is a solid sci-fi movie. Don't be afraid to plunk down $8 to see a matinee.

Just got back from seeing it, and it wasn't worth the 2 hours I wasted. Still, the actors deserve some credit for delivering some of those cheesy lines with a straight face.

in the U.S. it did horribly. however, the world wide gross this weekend was 100 million.
next weekend should solidify how much of a trainwreck Disney has on their hands

I'm interested in picking up reading these books. Are they worth the read? I've read the first three chapters through the link someone put and I'm very interested. Do they stay good?

Im gonna guess this movie does pretty decent 2nd weekend numbers off word of mouth

As collected the collected pulp magazine serials that they were intended, they're great. I've had a friend or two try them and complain that they don't hold up to modern sci-fi, but then modern sci-fi doesn't have the charm of ERB's works.
If you were able to enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark, you can enjoy these books. Like the John Carter movie, the emphasis is on adventure/fun.
