Not having a big name in the lead hurt them.

I thought the movie was good, not great. I have never read the Burroughs works, but the movie did a good enough job to pique my interest in reading them. I also thought the movie excelled in adapting 100 year old sci fi concepts to today.
On the surface the movie is a pretty simple literary topos of the loner resisting some higher cause, but the way the plot was presented actually gave it more depth then expected, and I wish it could have been explored further (perhaps why I want to pick up the books).
The most bothersome part of the movie was the character of Dejah, played by Lynn Collins. Either her role was written very poorly or she is an incredibly bad actress, although easy on the eyes.

Quite enjoyable
You're not the first person I heard say this. Apparently it is surprising people.

Yeah, even some of the more critical review sites have had decent things to say, good cinema score so far as well. Sounds like a solid but not amazing movie that will bomb horribly at the box office but do well on dvd.

The reviews I am seeing from the movie boards is nearly everyone liked the move and have it around an 8 on a 10 scale.
They are all saying the trailers are not doing the movie justice.
here are some of the first lines of reviews:
Cheesy, ludicrous plot but highly enjoyable blockbuster Sci-fi fantasy adventure
John Carter: A surprising gem that shines bright and true
Mars never looked so good
Really enjoyed it
Breathtaking
I have been to Barsoom! his comments has a good sum ups of all the reviews;
And? Holy Living Thark! The bar on science fiction and fantasy movies has Officially Been Raised.
If you liked AVATAR you'll love JOHN CARTER.
There seems to be 2 schools on this movie, the book reader who seems to put it in the 6 of 10 range and those that have not read the book.
Also there is a backlash from some anti Disney people, who seem to attack Disney more than the movie in their reviews.
Going to see it today.

I would say a very good movie, just got out of the 3-d showing.
Not a great movie but a good one, if you liked Avatar, you will like this movie a lot.

I just got back from seeing it and I want a sequel. It was very good and I just don't see what the hate for this movie is.
Overall if you are on the fence go see it, you won't be disappointed.

Not sure why some people have a hatred for this movie.
I've read all of the books, I loved the movie.
My wife didn't know word one about John Carter of Mars, she loved the movie.
A guy in the audience said in a loud voice (during the credits), "Why do the critics hate this? It was awesome!"
So much better than Avatar. The Tharks were so much more "real" than the Navi.
And Woola kicked arse.

I guess I should catch an early showing tomorrow, even though my favorite volume of the series doesn't have John Carter in it: "A Fighting Man of Mars"

My favorite as well (but J.C. does make an appearance in the book).

Are the books legit?
About to start the 3rd. I enjoyed the first 2. It amazes me that they were written so long ago. Just doesn't seem like someone should have been able to come up with that stuff back then.

Anyone that saw it and read the books care to fill me in on if it follows the books and if so which one or ones does it? Thanks. Just a little confused from the trailers.
