Has anyone heard if they're planning on adding any new guns to the list or just more calibers

quote:

I'm at the March meeting of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, and the regulations board just approved the use of the following calibers for the primitive-arms season:

.38-40 Win.
.38-55 Win.
.375 Win.
.357 S&W Mag.
.38 S&W Special
.35 Win. SL
.351 Win. SL

Not recommended by the department nor approved by the commission was the .35 Whelen because of its high power. LDWF official Jimmy Anthony called it a 'long-range ballistic missile.'

gotta love "primitive weapons"... Makes me want to puke.

Realize I'm in the minority that still shoot flintlocks and feel this way. Just change the name of the season, to something else. Hell for that matter just make it all gun season there isn't any difference any more anyway.

I agree. I shoot an inline muzzleloader and it doesn't really feel primitive except that it's slow to reload. Hunting with a cartridge and calling it primitive doesn't really make sense to me.

When is the last time you saw a picture of Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett with a Leupold 50mm scope on it?

I still don't have a scope on mine. I was considering a red dot at one point but never did it.

Well this is a pleasant suprise. Normally when this comes up on a chat board and I speak my mind I get my arse handed to me (I am sure it's still coming). Doesn't change my opinion, but glad to see I'm not so far in the minority on here.

It's "primitive weapons" not muzzleloader but I see your point. In their defense, they're trying to appeal to more people which will generate more revenue through license sales and also from federal dollars that are distributed based on hunter numbers.

No different than allowing crossbows in archery or special youth deer seasons. The HIP program and deer and turkey tags are also a way of counting hunters who are exempt from buying license. I personally wish everyone were hunters and anti hunters and gun control freaks didn't exist

Seemed like it would be a little easier to use since it sits up higher off the gun. Decided its not worth it, I'm good enough with iron sights.

I've always agreed with you on it FWIW.
Though I don't see myself ever going buy a flintlock

I do agree with you. No doubt about it.

The way they define primitive is very loose.

I enjoy shooing my black powder rifle

So I gather that no one knows if they're adding any new firearms to the list.

Didn't the OP answer it's own question?
Or maybe I don't see what you're asking

Ultimately it's about license sales and gun & ammo sales, all of which results in more $ for LDWF. These new calibers aren't primitive, and given the range of most hunting situations, they are no different from a newer rifle.

LDWF needs to do more work improving access and increasing/improving the deer herd on public land. People are falling out of the hunting tradition because they have fewer places to go, and public hunting sucks. So they extend the season and open the primitive/archery seasons to more weapons, which further reduces the deer population on public land. It's a vicious cycle.

Are they approving any new makes of firearms like Ruger Model 1 or Thompson Encore and so on. Or only new calibers for the same old guns?

I didn't know there were specific makes. I just thought it has to be single shot

I agree but those improvements require money and more money requires more hunters who kill more game and like you said it's a vicious cycle.
