None, it's about taxes/fees etc.

IMO the handi rifles and the optimas and such were more a case of meeting a need than creating a need.

Has anyone heard if they're planning on adding any new guns to the list or just more calibers

Rep Thibaut has a bill this session to allow breech loading rifles of a .35 or larger caliber be used during the primitive firearms season. Idk if that's what you're talking about, just saw the bill earlier today and remembered seeing this thread.

I would love to see LA expand the calibers. I completely agree the "primitive weapons" designation is a joke, but I'm not complaining about an extra couple weeks of season. When I get older I'll get into the "true primitive weapons". In the mean time I wish the 35 whelen was on there! Legal in MS (where I lived for 5 yrs). Shoots a hell of lot flatter than a 45-70. But as I understand it pretty much ballistic equivalent of the -06 necked up.

So the point is everyone seems to love the primitive weapon season as an extension of firearm season, not the requirement to use a true muzzleloader. Why not just extend firearm season????

I am a flintlock purist and hunt with it 90% of the time when after deer and turkey and using a firearm. Having a special season wouldn't change a thing for me. So why not due away with "primitive weapon" season and just have a longer gun season?

I don't get it either.

Do you shoot cap and ball pistols too? That is something I'll buy eventually.

Slick,

Believe it or not I don't own a pistol of any kind. Have thought about it but just haven't done it. Have all shotguns and rifles. I think a blackpowder pistol would be fun, less to clean after shooting it!

I have a replica cap'n ball revolver. .36 cal.
I've only shot it twice. I bought it used from a friend. I don't like to shoot it because the cylinder does not seem to line up all the time.

The only thing I hate about using Black Powder or substitutes is the CLEANING!

I may actualy get a flinchlock one day.

How many of yall have ever shoot a flintlock?
How much crap hits you in the face?
I've never even seen one in the real.

Very rarely do I get hit with powder from a flintlock. They are fun to shoot, I love them. The biggest issue there is with them is that after shooting them you need about an hour to devote to cleaning them as the powder is so corrosive. The other key to shooting a flintlock is keeping the Frizel (spelling) clean and free of debris and rust. This area is the key to the gun going off on time when pulling the trigger.

What brand do you have?
50 cal?
I've seen Pedersoli's in a catalog and they look like fine rifles.
Do you shoot real BP?
I would like to stay away from real BP, but I know thats probably taboo to real flinchlock shooters.
I assume you sling patched round balls, where I would also rather conicles.
Sorry bout the brain picking.

I have three flintlocks.

All were built by a guy on the westbank about 30 years ago. None are "brand names". I have a .50 cal, .45 cal, and a .25 cal.

All shoot roundballs with patches, all use true black powder. My favorite is the .25 cal which I use for squirrel hunting, it's a real kick to chase squirrels with it.

I try and shoot them at least once a month to keep up the shooting skills. Shooting flintlocks WILL make you a better shot having to hold on the target longer.

Do you recommend any particulare commercial rifles?
What about gear?

I know they will delay fire, my sidelock has even done this once or twice.
How distracting are the sparks flying around your face?

We need a primitive weapons squirrel season.
Honestly though that does sound fun.

Why not do away with the primitive arms season and the youth hunts altogether. Why do kids need a special weekend? My young'n has bowhunted on youth weekend since he was 14. I hunt Area 2 and these two special interest weekends cut into half of MY early archery season.

If it was up to me we would have bows only(crossbows for elderly and handicapped only) until Thanksgiving and then "no holds barred, anything goes" for the remainder of the season. But that wouldn't generate much interest for newcomers and would probably alienate a few of your "opening weekend warriors" as well.

I would rather see a true primitive season with modern replica flintlocks and percussions and no optics, or just an open sights only season where you could use anything.

I hate the way it is done now. Modern inlines with big optics just leave me cold.
