Yet another Drew Brees thread...

As many have pointed out, Drew Brees is getting the franchise tag.. for now at least. Now, I don't claim to be all knowing when it comes to matters of football or the day to day operations of football as a whole. But, it seems to me that you pay the best the best money. Now, what we're seeing unfold now is Drew wanting Payton Manning money, i.e, the best. What I'm sure we can all agree on, should we leave our bias at the door and look objectively at the situation, is that Manning, upon signing his deal, was the best qb in the league. And possibly of all time.

Drew is without a doubt one of the all time greats, but let's be honest with ourselves, Manning is or was better. Yes, I know Drew went head to with Manning and won in the Super Bowl, but how many league MVPs does he have? How many 14 win seasons does he have? There is no doubt Drew is one of the best of all time, but he's asking for the same money THE best of all time got.

Outside of the argument that Brees is not on the level that Manning was, there's the team factor. The money Drew wants could potential hurt the team as a whole. The 5 million more a season he wants could be used to say... help to resign Nicks or Colston? I think as a qb, and as Drew Brees more specifically than others, you have to be a leader for not just your team, but the community you live in. There is no denying what he has done for this city, but what kind of message do give to your fans who love you, when 18 Million isn't good enough? Some of the fans spend a great portion of their income to see you play, and you're gonna gripe of 5 million when you already have 18 sitting in front of you? I think, and I'm not on of these fans, a portion of the who dat nation will hold a grudge for this.

Which leads me to my final point, there is a simple way to resolve all of this that I'm not sure the front office has thought of. Drew wants 23 million in the early part of his contract, so i say give it to him. But instead of doing it on years 1,2, and 3 (or however it's structured), give it to him on years 2,4, and 6. Give the saints some breathing room and allow them cap space in the early part of his contract to pay other key players.

Now my final word, I am a huge Brees fan, even from his college days. I always liked watching the passion he plays with. To loose him may be the end of this team as we know it today. I do believe that when push comes to shove Brees will get the money he wants one way or the other. As for me, I am, like many of you, a little disappointed in him. I always saw him as one who put the team ahead of himself. Now it almost appears selfish of him to be putting the saints in a bind to sign him. I hope this ends pleasantly...
