How many people can remember Daddy Dale telling Jose not to shoot the ball at the end of a game? This video and the games outcome would give a lot of people a good laugh. Does anyone have it?

I do..."Jose, don't create any shots" was the exact quote. Then he threw up one-handed javelin shot from the free throw line.

Dale always let them Mike him so there were lots of good ones. I can remember once Dale was telling all his kids who to guard and one of them finally said "we have the ball coach".

I've looked many times on youtube and never found it. One of my most memorable hoops moments.

I was in the pep band back then. That was a really fun gig. Far batter than football. All you had to do as show up and play. We traveled with the team in all post season play which was a sure thing back then.

Jose Vargas was a great player and a nice guy. I met him several times and he was always nice. He had the biggest hands of anybody that I've ever seen. They were like catcher's mitts.

That was against Georgetown and Dikembo Mutombo, if I'm not mistaken...

I remember my brother-in-law jumping up and screaming "don't shoot Jose!" at a game we attended.

"Jose'...whatever you do...DO NOT SHOOT THE BALL."

I still have to laugh about it to this day just to keep from crying.

I always remembered that one. I think I might have an old VHS tape of it somewhere along with the CJ 55 point game at Florida. I also have the UNLV and Loyola Marymount games on VHS I think.

There will never be another Jose Vargas.

87% certain that the two never played together.

Think Jose graduated in in spring '88 and Mutombo started the following fall.

Not doubt...loved "The Latin Bull".

Remember the urban legend of him throwing the guy throw the window of a fast food restaurant.

Or how about him going to talk to the guy who locked himself in Mike the Tiger's cage, because the guy demanded to see Dale but Dale was out of town.

Definitely against Georgetown and I remember it well and I dont know if it was Billy Packer or who was announcing off hand may have been Dick Enberg and after the game he basically says after the Vargas shot , well you cant blame that loss on Dale as he told Vargas specifically not to shoot .

It was one loss that I actually laughed afterwards. Dale told him a couple of times in the huddle. How many bad plays end up being fond memories. I sure wish we could find and post that clip for the younger fans. I will always be a Dale Brown fan because he was real and honest. I can't stand a liar.

EDIT: Both Alonzo Mourning & Dikembe Mutombo first played at Georgetown during the 1988-89 season. I don't remember who played center for them during the 1987-88 season.

EDIT2: The YouTube video has the wrong year. That game was actually from January 29, 1989.

I think LSU had 2 huge games against Georgetown in 1988. One in March as part of the Tourney, and another as part of the 1988-89 regular season, when Chris Jackson & Ricky Blanton helped the Tigers upset #2 Georgetown: LINK.

I think Vargas was part of the first game, but not part of the second one.

Thanks Doc but that is not the one. But I still enjoyed watching and seeing what LSU basketball should still be.

Well it might be from the opening round of the NCAA Tourney in March 1988. I can't find the video for it, but if it involves Vargas & Georgetown, then that's likely the game in question.
