I was in the stand the other day and heard this loud arse roar..something i have never heard before and literally had no idea what it was. I was just watching the hunting channel and a buck on there was making that same exact roaring sound. Anyone hear this before? Is it something they do during the rut?

I've heard it. The deer was in a lane and roared, then started chasing a doe and grunting and 3 other bucks followed. Pretty cool to watch deer like that in the wild when they don't have a clue you're there.

I had a buck grunt back at me for the first time this season. 3 or 4 times worth of grunting back and fourth while he was running a doe. It was pretty cool. Didn't get a shot on him, but shot his buddy 30 minutes later.

Shot a big 8 pt. on the edge of a big swamp one time. I was 16 with little deer hunting experience. When I shot it it made that long, drawn out grunt/belching sounding noise it went down and was kicking in the water. Freaked me out as well as a couple of other hunters nearby (was in Thistlethwaite WMA). They came over to see what the hell was making that noise- one thought I had shot a hog- lol...

I'd hate to hear a roar sitting in my stand waiting for daylight.

I thought the buck roar was a rare occurrence. Like they didn't even really know what it was until recently or something. I dunno, I read something about it a few years back. Tried finding an informative article but all googling yielded was calls and other forums.

I shot one this year and when I put him on the tailgate his head plopped down and it made a long drawn out grunt. It was strange. It was loud too.
