As we sit and wait for recruiting news, we need to be prepared to accept that this is it out of the class. Biggest possible get seems to be Kwon Alexander. That would give us 22 commits.

I say that is it, because absent some people from this class not making the grades (rumours about Sandolph?), Miles will have to "Saban" current players to fit under the 85 player cap. By my count of the current roster, we have at least 61 players on scholarship who will return next season (this figure excludes Jakhari Gore who is reported to be leaving the team, but includes Kadron Boone). I say at least because I am not positive what the SQ designation means on the roster and if it indicates that player is not on scholarship. There are at least three guys (Maclin/Copeland/Alleman) with that designation who I though we signed to scholarships. Do they possibly have some other scholarship that does not count against the 85? I have included Elliot Porter in the 61 count because I think he was awarded or will be awarded a scholarship.

So, two scenarios: Without the three, we are @ 61 and can take 24 more scholarship players to the 85 max. IF those three (or two of the 3) are on athletic scholarship, the number is reduced by 3, meaning 64 current players on scholarship and only 21 spots, or, taking Alleman out, leaving 22 spots…

Anyone have better information other opinions on this?

Last I counted, the number was at 66, which included Josh D. getting a 6th year.

I count 64 scholarship guys returning, not including Josh D. Alleman and Porter were not on scholarship last year. Copeland and Maclin were. This is all based on the fact that the official 2011 roster on lsusports.net includes 85 players who signed LOI's with LSU, excluding Porter, meaning there was no room to give a scholarship to anyone who did not sign a LOI (Alleman, e.g.), unless one was taken away from someone who did and we were unaware of it.

That is correct and thanks for the info. I should have noted that Josh D was not included in my number. So barring people on the roster leaving, at 66 we can only actually take 19? Who from this class is in grade danger?

So adding back Josh D, assuming he gets a 6th year, we stand at 65, giving us 20 plus whatever attrition brings. Is Gore confirmed gone?

It means "Squad" - they probably dressed out for every home game, perhaps played some and possibly even traveled. However, SQ means the player did not play enough in live competition to earn a varsity letter for the year.

At LSU it is predominantly practice squad players and that bear the "SQ" designation on the roster, but I am sure there are exceptions. J.C. Copeland, for example, was listed as a sophomore with "SQ" as experience for 2011. He played in 2010, but did not earn a letter.

ETA: Copeland is on scholarship.

That's how I count it.

Couldn't find reputable news outlet reporting it with a google search, but I think it's been unofficially confirmed by some of the LSU pay sites.

Not counting Alleman,Josh D and Porter we are at 70 currently counting the EE guys.

Louis
Feist
Ferguson
Alexander
Hill

That leaves 16 more kids currently commited with 15 open spots max.

Not sure if Alleman will go on schollie or not
Josh D may get the 6th year but also may not get cleared medically
Poter will go on either this year or next depending on how his release was done. Some have to pay 1 year and some 2

So basically we need to "lose" at least 1 and up to 3-4 to get the current class in without factoring in non qualifiers. We can mange it and I'm sure the coaches have an idea who is losing a spot.

On another note though, we are looking at a small class next year. The rantards aren't going to like that.

Mostly because math is not their strong suit. But I bet we lose some juniors next year so class will be around 20 or so.

I'm banking on losing Reid, Faulk and Montgomery. That would give us 12 counting the 9 srs on the roster for sure. If Alleman,Josh D or both count towards the numbers then that would add 1-2. Add in attrition of 3-5 and I say we'll likely be at about 15-18 with 20 likely being the high water mark. Then again the possibility is there that we could have a class of 10-12. Considering that we'll most assuredly take a K and possibly a FB, the masses of rantards will be screaming "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" again. Can't wait.

Non-football-scholarship players who receive other institutional aid only count against the 85 limit only if they were "recruited" (as determined by the NCAA). Also, if they play within two years they also count back as an initial counter against the 25 limit in the first year in which they enrolled.
