No matter what I think of the president that's in office it's still the fricking president and I would go just to be there.

It's still (more or less) a free country. He doesn't like Obama and doesn't want to go. Can't blame me for spending his time on something less miserable.

He's also the only American on the team. So the sole American is the one refuses to meet his president. He's turning a non-political event (let's face it, every title team in every sport gets an invite - the only person I can think of who turned it down was James Harrison, and that was on truly bizarre "you don't invite the losers too" grounds) and turning it into a political event. Which is a shame. This is one of those "acts of state" not "acts of government". He's being a douchenozzle and making it all about himself, reportedly over his teammates objections.
If I didn't already hate the Bruins, I'd use this as an excuse to start. Thomas is a great goalie, though.

I don't know if I'd go or not. I don't care who the president is. I guess it would depend on what's on tv that day.

how could anyone have a problem with this? Outside of not being there with your team, that article got it right I think. It's his choice and that's what's great about this country.

That is likely his intent. The fact that he is the only American means that he is the only one that has a vested interest in the outcome of the next election. As the MVP, maybe he thought he could use this event an excuse to promote whatever conservative political beliefs he holds. Ultimately, he is the only one that really has to deal with the fallout, if any. Whatever your opinion, the guy has balls to do something like that. Not many people would take a stand on anything much less this event.

I would think that this alone would be sufficient enough reason to get yourself there - in the context of celebrating a championship you are there to visit the POTUS, regardless of their name or politics. Learn and know time and place and class.

Also, the "free speech" argument is a red herring. He clearly has free speech becuase, well, he didn't go and no one is going to his house to cart him off to jail. But freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence from your speech. Or freedom from criticizm.
To bring up the counter example politically, you are also a gigantic douche canoe if you refuse to stand for the national anthem. Sure, you have the RIGHT to do it, but that doesn't make you any less of an a-hole.
Oh, and Brad Marchand being called the Little Ball of Hate is by far the fact in this article which infuriated me the most. That's Pat Verbeek. Stop stealing his nickname.

I'd go but we were in this same position in 05 and we had a few who didn't want to meet Bush, but ended up going. Still wouldn't have had a problem had they not gone.
He is not our 'supreme leader' he's an elected official. If you decide that you don't want to meet him, then that's your prerogative.
