This "writer" took advantage of family members willng to talk to him to write an article about some very painful times in this young man's life. It was obvious that Tyrann was pressed to answer questions about his family that made him uncomfortable. I can't imagine how hurtful it must be for him to read something like this This is exploitative journalism and Thayer Evans should be ashamed.
I kind of feel the same way...a lot of those details could have been left out.

Crazy article about HB7's family
quote:
His mother, grandmother and uncle Tyrone all mention the money they hope Mathieu will someday make in the NFL.
This worries me.
Why?

Eh, if anything, I admire him even more now for what he's made of himself in spite of all that.

this line makes them seem like leeches, and I've never gotten that from his uncle Tyrone or his wife, ya know, the ppl that took him in (and have done a few interviews, but are conspicuously absent here).
after the JJ hatchet job article the other day, not really surprised if FoxSports mischaracterized something.

Kind of gives new perspective on his original nickname "little ball of hate."

Wow.....crazy article. However, the writer is obviously a novice and a dickhead. Amazing what TM7 has been through...

Best use of emoticon in history....

"...I told ya’ll I would do a mother****** before they do me.” He ended the sentence with a happy-face mark.

I understand what you are saying, I think Evans could have done a better job with the article, but I'm glad someone finally did a story into Tyrann's past. First I've seen of it, correct me if I'm wrong.

Man, that guy is an awesome player and seems like a good person, just has a lot of fire in his belly.
That's about all I care about, the man (as much as a fan who doesn't know him can) and his mad skills.
But I think the article is good in that it gives a great inspiration to kids growing up in similar situations.

Two of the comments at the bottom were ridiculous. Thanks tigerpride3183 for setting them straight.

That was a pretty well-written article. It's incredible that he's been able to accomplish so much.
Stay positive, Tyrann.

That was never his nickname.

Call him "Jack" if you want to get a rise. Appears he is Jack Murphy and has a flickr photostream.LINK /

If you really take the time to read this article, it will allow you to understand who Tyrann really is. He has experienced more tragedy and heartache than most of us put together. His story is an inspiration. This is reality in America and it is a reality that most folks do not want to see. Glad he is a Tiger.

Very interesting article and answers a number of the questions I had about Mathieu's background. A couple of things I thought were bush league, though:
1. The manner in which the author clearly meant to imply "trouble" in referencing the OBVIOUS fact that Mathieu is likely to earn excellent money in the NFL. He could have interviewed ME and been able to get a similar comment. If there really is an issue there, then state it and give some notion as to why. My guess is that there is nothing there (aside from from is there with most any young man making money at a young age).
2. The article vastly underplays the role of his gainfully employed adoptive parents (and aunt/uncle) in raising him FROM THE AGE OF FIVE, and putting him through Catholic schools. I was stunned to see how tough Mathieu's life has been in many respects, but the author was so hell bent on telling what happened from circa 1990-97 as to ignore almost anything else. Perhaps his angle was to focus on the untold story - fair enough - but I wonder how many people come away from this story knowing that Mathieu was raised in a stable, two-parent home in which both (adoptive) parents were gainfully employed and even rather prominent in New Orleans' African-American social scene (king and queen of Zulu)? Not many, I suspect.
