Please permit me to acknowledge the unexpected passing of David Mills, of Shreveport, earlier this week.

David, a sweetheart of a man, was afflicted with muscular dystrophy and spent his last years in a wheelchair. But that did not stop him from having football season tickets and making the trek from Shreveport for each home game and then traveling back to Shreveport as soon as the game was over, as he was more comfortable in his specially-equipped home than a hotel room.

When I first became friends with him in the 2007 championship year, he was still driving himself to Baton Rouge in his specially-equipped truck along with a few friends. In subsequent years, he had at least one friend who would fly David to Baton Rouge in his private plane for each game.

You may have seen David on gamedays...he could always be found at the bottom of Victory Hill in his wheelchair, on the south side of Stadium Drive right in front of the food stand. Often Coach Miles would acknowlege David with a nod of the head and sometimes with a handshake. Towards the end of the 2007 when the Miles-to-Michigan rumors were swirling, David wrote a heart-felt letter to Coach Miles asking him to stay and telling him how much he loved LSU. And looking back now, I am so glad that David got to experience the 2007 BCSCG despite not feeling up to par that day.

David never complained about his condition and spent much of his time sponsoring others who needed encouragement and support. And no matter the topic, any conversation with David always evolved into a discussion about the Tigers.

If you are interested, his obituary is in todays Shreveport Times...please excuse me for not knowing how to post a link to it.

Hope this post wasn't too long, but I couldn't let his passing go by without honoring my friend. Bama doesn't stand a chance now that David's up in Heaven hounding the powers-that-be.

Please say a prayer for his family. Thanks very much.

I am assuming that he was a good Christian. If he was, I am with the guy who said that he has the best seat in the house. May his family have the peace that goes beyond human understanding. He sounded like a great person.
