6th Annual Preseason 8th Grade CSAL Basketball Rankings

Jamborees have taken place, but the season doesn't tip off until the new year. Here are the preseason rankings and predictions of who will make the Elite 8.
1.St. Thomas More – The battle to cut down the nets in Catholic High’s Gymnasium at the Elite 8 is really a 2 team race this season. STM and St. George split wins in their games last season. Expect either of these teams to win every major tournament and to battle it out in the Elite 8 Championship. STM is led by one of the best players in recent CSAL history. He is a do it all forward who can shoot, rebound and defend.
2.St. George – St. Thomas More gets the #1 ranking partly due to the fact that they have the best player in the league, but St. George does have more depth. Like most SGS teams, these Dragons possess great size and speed. St. George was definitely the program of the decade from 2000-2010. Can they keep it up for this decade? How the Dragons defend the STM Flex Offense could be the determining factor in the potential championship game.
3.Sacred Heart – There is a major drop off between 2 and 3, but the #3 ranking is clearly filled by Sacred Heart. They do not have much depth, but they get up and down the court in a hurry and can cause problems for poor ball handling teams with their ball pressure.
4.Our Lady of Mercy – After the top 3 spots, it really is up for grabs. The once great OLOM program of the early 2000’s has taken a bit of a dip, but is still a perennial Elite 8 team. They can’t compete with SGS and STM this season, but should win some of the lesser tournaments.
5.St. Jude – The cougars, coached by a former LSU great, have one of the best full court presses in the league. They will win games with defense and tenacious rebounding. They have one of the best student sections in the league as well which makes them tough to beat at home.
6.St. Aloysius – The Lions are a consistent bubble team for the Elite 8 most seasons. This year is expected to be the same as any other. They look to grab 1 of 2 at large spots to make the tournament. The Lions changed coaching staffs a few years ago, and the new staff's focus on hustle and defense has really paid off.
7.Holy Family – Holy Family is led by the fearless point guard. Though out of control at times, he is a staunch defender and a solid distributor. Due to the fact that they are undersized, they take a lot of outside shots. They will live and die by the 3. They like to run a 1-2-2 half court trap which could cause trouble for un-expecting teams.
8.CHS – The Baby Bears have had a couple of down seasons, but look to bounce back and make the tournament for the first time in 3 seasons. They have one of the larger front lines in the league. They can rebound and defend, but struggle to score with elite teams. Lack of depth could be their Achilles heel though.

I thought this thread wouldn't make an appearance in the wake of the Sandusky scandal.

Excited for my SHS tigers.
All those other schools might have more team success, my Sacred Heart has pumped out more All- STate players and College athletes than all those other schools within the last 12 years --- fact.

How is it looking this season?

How is it looking this season?
The elite 8 actually starts next Thursday. The first round matchups are as follows:
1. St. Thomas More versus 8. Ascension Catholic Middle School
These 2 teams have not played each other this season. STM has come out as the clear #1 seed. They are physical, fast, deep and execute very well. They have a fierce intensity just like their coach.
Ascension Catholic is led by their probable All CSAL center. He is averaging in the teens for points, and plays a ton of minutes. He is the centerpiece of their 2-1-2 zone, and compares to Chris Bosh in style. The matchup of him versus the Center for STM will be a great one, as both of these guys appear to have what it takes to play at the next level (high school.)
4. St. Aloysius versus 5. St. Jude
These 2 teams know each other very well as they are only separated by 5 miles. Aloysius has had an up and down season. At times Joe Lunardi had them projected as the 3 seed and at times Lunardi projected them as the 6 seed. They extend their man to man defense to half court which works well against poor ball handlers, but quick teams spread them out and create driving lanes.
St. Jude is one of the deepest teams in the league. They run a 1-3-1 non trapping zone. They have good size down low which may give Aloysius problems. As is tradition with the 4-5 matchup, it should be the most competitive of the first round.
3. Sacred Heart versus 6. Holy Family
Since switching coaches, Sacred Heart is the hottest team in the league, although they suffered a last minute loss to STM. They are led by their Kevin Durant type power forward. The home crowd has been chanting M-V-P for him. This team has been shooting lights out.
Holy Family is comes into the tournament limping after a heartbreaking 1 point loss to Catholic High. They have some good wins this season over ACMS and CHS though. They have a very tough matchup against the size of Sacred Heart. Their point guard will have to have a great game for them to get a victory.
2. St. George versus 7. Catholic High
This game has the most intriguing story-lines of any first round matchup. CHS's head coach was a player under St. George's head coach and played with St. George's assistant coach on an elite 8 championship team in the late 90's. CHS's assistant coach is also good friends with SGS's head coach. CHS's point guard and potential All CSAL player is a SGS transfer.
St. George has wins over just about every team in the upper division. They employ a 24 minutes of hell strategy that can be suffocating with different types of trapping presses. CHS though will be playing on their home court in what some people are calling the best homecourt advantage in the league. The "Bruin Brainiacs" have had the Bear Cave rocking. The Baby Bears are 5-2 on their home court this season.
