Josh Dworaczyk - gone or medical RS possible?

I believe JD is a 5th year SR... but is it possible he could get a medical RS and return... or is a given that his playing days are over?

Yes.

From the way it sounded at the beginning of the year, I'm not sure if, physically, he'll ever be able play again. But as far as a 6th year goes, technically he doesn't qualify.

Why is that?

Unlikely. Usually to get a hardship extension on the five-year eligibility window, you must have missed all or part of two years of competition due to injury. Josh redshirted voluntarily his first year, then later missed just one year of competition due to injury. And according to many "insiders", he probably will not be physically able to play effective football again, anyway.

There has been discussion whether JD satisfies the tehcnical requirements imposed by the NCAA for granting a 6th year of eligbility. It depends on the facts and circumstances as to why he redshirted as a true freshman in 2007. If he redshirted due to injury, the NCAA should grant him a 6th year.

I guess the school can certainly put together some paperwork documenting an "injury" and submit it. You never know with the NCAA. Typically though, I would think they would have had to file seeking the medical at the end of that year.

quote:He doesn't as said by a poster above. The thing is, it's a waiver of a rule and the NCAA can do what they want. There have been players in JD's position that have gotten a 6th year. Keenum is a recent one. He had a true reshirt year.

I thought he was coming back next year.

We've had 6 year players before because of medical redshirt. He will get a Medical redshirt it has nothing to do with a prior freshman redshirt.
HE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is what made me think of this ... and the fact that it really hasn't been discussed on the broadcasts of games when they have focused on hi just made me think he's probably not physically going to be able to play again, so it may all be moot.
Would like to have him return and get the chance to play a final year though.

There are no "medical" redshirts in the NCAA. They are all simply redshirts. Your reason for taking it is irrelevant to the NCAA.
In JD's case, he has a very good chance of getting the 6th year for two reasons:
1) He has already graduated. The NCAA is generally lenient in cases where the student has already graduated.
2) He had an injury his freshman year that required microscopic knee surgery and he tore his ACL in his 5th year. That qualifies him under the generally accepted conditions for a 6th year.

I can't believe some of the comments on this thread people just make up wrong info.
HE GETS A 6TH YEAR IF HE HAD A SEASON ENDING INJURY AND PLAYED IN LESS THEN 20% OF THE GAMES!
HE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR FOR HIS 6TH SEASON AND IS NOT THE FIRST TIGER TO DO THIS.

Ironic.
The NCAA can do whatever the hell it wants. There are no cut and dry guidelines for this type of thing.

University of Houston was successful in making the case that Keenum took a redshirt year as a result of a collarbone injury and that it was not voluntary. Actually, I believe Keenum was initially denied a 6th year but, on appeal, was able to show that his redshirt was due to a collarbone injury.
Keenum's case was similar to that of Kentrell Lockett of Ole Miss who was granted a 6th year. Ole Miss was able to convince the NCAA that he redshirted as a true freshmen because he was unable to perform as a result of a shoulder injury.
I believe this is correct and that the NCAA has authority to grant a 6th year. However, the NCAA's practice has been to deny a 6th year if there was a voluntary redshirt year.

LSU's compliance staff and medical staff put together a case and present it before the NCAA in late January or early February. The NCAA reviews it and makes its decision.
LSU also has an in-house NCAA staff member who supposedly has said that JD should be a shoe-in for another year, but it depends what kind of mood the NCAA board is in when they receive the case.
