Need some guidance for headset I bought

Bought a turtle beach head set did not have any direction in it so I used common sence to hook it up. This is the problem I have I can hear every thing but I do not think when I talk into the mik the players I am playing with on bf3 can hear me. When I talk into it there is no little mik sign that appears before my name like others. I have asked if any one can hear me an no one answers me. Do I need to turn any thing on in my settings or did I get screwed over. For ps3
