As New Orleans prepared to make a trade that could clear significantly more salary cap space for them, Hornets officials have reached out to see if they could still get involved in contract negotiations with free-agent center Nene and point guard J.J. Barea, league sources said.

Nene’s bidding could be pushing upwards of $14 million a season, with the Nuggets re-emerging as a serious suitor to keep him, sources said. The New Jersey Nets, Rockets and Indiana Pacers have yet to show a willingness to spend $14 million-$15 million a year to sign Nene, and that could ultimately leave him destined to return to the Nuggets. Still, many teams have yet to extend their best offers in free-agent talks.

I would love to have Nene here, but he's gonna want big bucks. And Barea was a great backup PG in Dallas. Yes, great. And he filled the starting position well when he needed.
Lots of good stuff in here.

Probably a little bit so. But given the realities of the NBA, at what point do you have to suck it up and pay a little more than you want. The Hornets, like most other teams, have overpaid for players in the past and been burned, but there's the other side to the coun. Nene would be nice.

Barea has annoyed the shite out of me in the past. But the midget can put up points and drive the opposition crazy when he's on.

The problem with the Golden State deal is you have no way of getting your second star because you'll be too good to tank. If you pick up Barea you can trade Jack for a mid 1st. We traded #11 for 2 picks in the 20s and cap relief, if Demps has 2 picks in the late teens and cap space maybe he can get a top 10 pick out of it.

that was more selling the pick, if memory serves

possibly, but i doubt it

but i just don't like barea as a long-term option. he's small, can't play D, and is streaky

most people just saw him in the playoffs (when he was ON). i'm just leery of that (esp since he was a 10ppg guy in the year)

I've been saying it since last year, I can definitely see Toronto doing a trade for him. They supposedly offered Chandler 4/$66. They want a center bad and no one will voluntarily go there. Their rookie center who Demps had some interest in is stuck in Lithuania this season. Okafor/Jack for Calderon/Jonas Valanciunas or Calderon/2012 1st.

Why would Toronto offer big money to Chandler? Why not just tank, get another lottery pick and pair him w/ valucinias and barnagni next season? They have to be one of the dumbest franchises in the league.

If Toronto is dumb enough to trade the rights to the Lithuanian, this needs to happen.

What's the deal on Valanciunas? Is he just playing out his current contract in Europe?

There was concern with his buyout situation in Lithuania, mainly because he doesn't have one, but ESPN.com reported over the weekend that could be settled, opening the door for him to join the Raptors this year.

[A] source close to the team told ESPN.com on Saturday that there's a small chance they might be able to get him this season. The source said that the team reached out to Valanciunas' agent over the weekend to gauge the center's interest in joining the Raptors in 2011-12. If Valanciunas has interest, the Toronto would have to work out a buyout with his team in Lithuania, Lietuvos Rytas.

His Lithuania team didn't qualify for Euroleague this season and is losing serious money. Bryan Colangelo said after the draft that he could "confirm" that Valanciunas's buyout was in place. However, that doesn't appear to be happening because Valanciunas does have the needed interest. Consider this from Monday via TSN.ca:

According to the Lithuanian Basketball official site LithuaniaBasketball.com, Valanciunas, who the Raptors took with the fifth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft will remain with his current team until the end of the season.

"I'm currently with Lietuvos Rytas and I'm not really interested in those talks, Valanciunas said. "There's a lot to be done here. I'm in Lietuvos Rytas, not the Raptors."

Wright for Belinelli was a win for Demps
The Peja Trade was a lateral move for both sides but the Hornets needed to cut payroll so Toronto basically did us a favor.

Bryan Colangelo = Demps' Bitch

Calderon would be good, but I'm not sure how badly they want to move him.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Valanciunas' rights plus Bargnani as a stretch 4, as they consider him a disappointment and want him out.

If we're going after Nene, we must have a plan of some sort to part with Okafor.

14 mill is a lot, but its what we are paying Okafor now anyway. Nene is a better player.

From Simmons article today breaking down centers who will be overpaid:

quote:

1c. Nene
This one scares the hell out of me. What am I getting, exactly? He's 29 years old and has a surgically repaired knee. He played nearly as many games the past three years (260, including playoffs) as he did for his first six seasons (315, including playoffs). He's not exactly an emotional leader — those Nuggets teams melted down as much as anyone, and you'd have to consider it at least somewhat telling that Carmelo Anthony pushed his way off a team that had a top-five center on it. The biggest thing for me: If he's a top-five center, then why is Nene such a lousy rebounder? These past three seasons, he averaged 32.6, 33.6 and 30.5 minutes per game … and 7.8, 7.6 and 7.6 rebounds. He wasn't even a top-25 rebounder last year. (FYI: LeBron nearly outrebounded him!) He also doesn't protect the rim that well; for instance, Dwyane Wade (1.14) Channing Frye (1.01), Shane Battier (0.99) averaged more blocks than Nene (0.97) last season.

With Nene, you're getting an athletic big man who makes 60 percent of his shots, as well as someone who makes opposing teams say, "They have a center" … and that's about it. At 29, you are who you are. He can't quite take over games; he's never going to do what Chandler did in last year's playoffs from a protecting-the-rim standpoint; he needs extra rebounding help or you're getting killed on the boards; he's never won anything; and oh, you better hope his knees hold up. For me, it's no contest — not only would I rather have Gasol or Chandler, I'd rather overpay Jordan (at least he's an up-and-comer) for 50 to 60 percent of what Nene will probably cost (four years, $74.3 million without a sign-and-trade).

So who's willing to splurge on Nene? Not to go all Hubie Brown on you, but we know the Nets will pay whatever it takes for a center and they're already "all in" after the Deron Williams trade. We know Houston is getting an above-average center come hell or high water. We know Indiana, Denver and Sacramento have a crapload of cap space, and we know Toronto and Washington are an executed amnesty clause away from getting there. We also know that Memphis is vowing to match any restricted offer to Gasol.

That means seven teams might be bidding for Chandler and Nene … and two (New Jersey and Houston) are desperate. Even if they're worth $55 million apiece for four years, they'll end up getting $20 million more; I wouldn't be shocked if the Nets pulled off a sign-and-trade with Denver to give Nene $100 million for five. You think Mikhail Prokhorov cares about overpaying the fifth-best center in basketball? You think he cares about dropping an extra $50 million per year with the tougher luxury tax? I don't think Nene's next contract will be remembered on the Rashard Lewis/Gilbert Arenas level as a historical abomination, but at the very least, it will join Joe Johnson's extension as this decade's defining example of a team overpaying a good player who isn't great (or even close to great).
