What do you think of the Fire? Considering getting the GF one for Xmas.

Anyone else with one feel free to chime in with a quick summary/review too... TIA

Nice Display but I hate the Amazon interface.

I like it so far, the Weather Channel App doesn't show a radar.

Also I can't find a video format that I can access via Cloud to show up.

I have rooted 2 of them. They are MUCH nicer after you can install the Android market and run a custom launcher instead of the Kindle interface.

Get it, she will enjoy it.

iPad is awesome, but they are simply not in the category and are not meant to be.

$500 doesn't compare to $200. Your money will actually be used with the features in the Fire compared to all of the iPad features that go unused.

+1

My experience with the iPad has been that I just don't get it, in that I don't get what most everyday people will use it for that their phone can't do.

People bitch about the "closed" nature of the Fire, but that's only a bad thing if you want to do something it doesn't do, obviously.

Don't expect it to have the same # of Apps that Android appstore or iTunes have. Expect it to be what it is advertised as and you won't be disappointed.

I love mine.

Same.

If they would have more options for a tablet on the market at the time of my purchase; I wouldn't have bought an iPad after using.

It is really just a web browser for me, that is it.

Have a feeling talking to others in different parts of the country that this also holds true for every demographic.

only the movies/music/books/apps you buy from Amazon are able to be stored in Amazon's cloud.

Exactly. I look at it as this.

1. Tablet
1a Entertainment Tablet
a iPad
1b Everyday use Tablet
b Kindle Fire

They are not meant to be grouped together, why the $300 price difference.

If you purchase, you are purchasing something that shouldn't be compared to an iPad. They are simply not on the same level and you need to take the Fire/Nook FWIW.

I love my iPad 2. I read (kindle books oddly enough) on it. Youtube videos. When travelling I load videos on it. I use a lot of apps for finances and that sort of thing (I don't play games on it or my phone).

If I could jailbreak it then that would be sweet to do what I want completely on it.

That said; it was a gift. I don't think I would spend the money on it. I do love it though.

I think the Fire can do most of those things, though again, the apps are comparatively limited. Also, no 3G on the Fire. I'm sure they will have it on future Fires, but I don't want it.

Biggest positive for Fire compared to iPad (other than price) is that it's smaller.
