UPDATED: Need to talk scopes. Learned the hard way.

So as most of you know. I missed a Doe today. 100yds. Clean miss. That has happened twice now in two years. I thought I had just missed the first time. Then a week later I shot a spike and killed it. Thing was he was 40yds and it wasn't the best shot placement.
Well after today I shot it when I got home and could not get any sort of groping. High left. Low. Left. High right. Miss. Low right. Etc. Took 13 shots and every one of them were all over the target ( @100yds )
So now I need a scope. Shooting a Remingon 700 30-06

Someone please talk me into buying either or

So are you using a crappy scope now? Open sights? Is there something wrong with your gun?
Posted on 11/24/11 at 1:58 pm to mylsuhat
Might be the gun. That'd be some kind of awful scope to be all over the place like that. However I would recommend the Trijicon Accupoint.

It's gotta be something loose inside the scope that's moving.

I know this sounds really simple, but I've seen this in guns when the screws that hold the scope in place have gotten loosened. It's kind of like the IT guy always making sure it is plugged in first, but it's always the first thing to check. Those suckers need to be tightened down as hard as you can.

I don't know what kind of money you're looking to spend, but I saw academy had the leupold rifleman 3x9x40 for $159. It's hard to go wrong even with their low end scopes.

Buy a cheap scope from Wal-Mart and see if that makes a difference. If not... you won't have wasted a bunch of money on a nice scope. If the cheap scope fixes it... save it for a .22 or something and go get the scope you want.

I shoot the exact gun as you, and I changed scopes last year before the season because my 20+ year old scope was fogging up at night.
Once I got the new scope on and bore sighted and started hitting paper, I was all over the place.
It could have something to do with the new mounts for the new scope or something, basically I just gave it to my dad and let him destroy his shoulder trying to sight it in.
I think my problem was a rookie mistake. I was adjusting my scope after every shot, when I should have been shooting groups of 3 before adjusting the scope.
For the record I bought the Leupold 3-9x50 rifleman. Wanted the VX-II but it was out of stock and the rifleman was 30 bucks cheaper. Couldn't afford the beast that is the VX-III.

I checked the scope mounts and it doesn't budge. Has to be internal.
Where was that 3-9x40?

I have a buddy that was having the Sam problem as you. Very inconsistent. Took the scope off and the mounts were loose.

Academy has the leupold for $159, and Bass Pro has the same scope for $169 with a scope cover.

have you cleaned the bore? My rifle was all over the paper when I shot it this year. Cleaned the bore, and it went right back to grouping like it is supposed to.

what kind of mounts you got
can't use see-thru, too much kick

Im a leupold man. I love em.

You let the barrel cool after every couple shots when siting it in?
Posted on 11/24/11 at 3:47 pm to yellowfin
I've got that same rifle. Make sure the stock doesn't touch the barrel. I use leupold mounts, and Leupold vari-x III. Block bedded. And I can put all the holes touching at 100 all day with it.
What they said about the screws getting loose is definitely something to check. I use a torque wrench on mine for that reason. But you've probably got a bad scope if it's that far off.

Get a good scope. VxII would be a good affordable option. Take scope mounts off gun. Clean all surfaces with lighter fluid and remount your rings and bases making sure everything is torqued correctly. Clean bore. Go shoot. Make sure you give yourself a few shots to foul a clean barrel before expecting tight groups.

What kind of money are you looking at?
Bro in law just bought a Redfield Evolution online for like 150ish. Like watching HD tv.
