if you could go to only one vineyard or tasting room on a visit to the valley, which would it be and why?

V. Suttui by far.

Excellent wines. One of the best tasting rooms. Great deli and gift shop. Very picturesque. Nice outside dining area. Oh, and you can't buy their wines in stores.

I've been there a dozen times. Go with the a bottle of Gamay Rouge and a Muffaletta and picnic under the Oaks.

Can't say I agree with this at all. Place is like Disney World for wine: wine keychains, wine post-its, wine hats... Personally, I just don't care much for their wines, or having to weave through hundreds of snowbirds in their shorts and long socks to get to a tasting room.

To the original poster: what are you looking for, exactly? The best view? The best wine? The largest selection? The most bang for your buck?

I will say that I prefer the Sonoma wineries to the Napa wineries, for both taste and experience.

Swanson. Because I love the wine and the round table tasting is a great one.

Restaurant choice would be Mustards Grill in St. Helena.

My wife and I went to a few in Sonoma during our honeymoon in June. Of the ones we went to, Imagery was our favorite.

Awesome wines combined with local art. A great time

+1. This is important to know because recommendations will vary depending on what you're after.

And also, don't go to V. Sattui. Disney World for wine is an accurate assessment. Unless mediocrity and experiencing a tourst trap is the goal.

I was just looking for something new to try. We're staying in Calistoga so we'll probably stay on the Napa side of the valley.

I have my favorites and a few others I've been wanting to try. Just wanted to see if there were any diamonds in the rough that are can't miss.

Since you're in Calistoga, consider Chateau Montelena. Montelena won the white wine category in the "Judgment of Paris" tasting in 1976 for their Chardonnay and their estate cab is one of the longest lived and consistently well made wines in Napa (CM and the JoP was also the subject of the movie Bottle Shock). The grounds are also beautiful. If you end up going to a winery south of Calistoga, take the Silverado Trail rather than Hwy 29, it's more scenic and has a lot less traffic.

+1. Doing their tasting, late in the afternoon out on their terrace, is an experience that's difficult to beat. I think their view is the best in the valley and the wines are pretty good too. Phelps is a good example of a large production winery that is very consistent and very good.
