Thinking about getting a bow for deer hunting, what should I look for?

Started deer hunting with a rifle a few years ago and I'm hooked...but I want to extend my season.

What should I look for in buying a bow?

Like you said about your dad with an old school Bear bow in another thread, my dad still has the same bow that he has killed many dear with. But Bear is putting out a good bow now for the money.

Will no doubt be my next brand purchase

I shoot bear and my brother has a Hoyt. They shoot identical. My was about 1/2 the price.

My brother bought a Bear Charge this summer for like $400 ready to hunt. Their 2012 models look badass. Great bows for the price.

I've only owned mathews bows. I love them. The newest model has a really short axle length which comes in handy.

What type of specs should I look for?

I had a small bow when I was a kid and got pretty good with it but it's been many years since I've even looked at a bow.

Look for something that fits your physique, strength, and budget.

Most of the new bows have 80 to 85% let-off with a solo cam. I am not a fan of the increased let-off shooting a higher draw weight due to relying on pure upper body strength when letting off up in a tree if you have to pass on a shot.

Find something that you are comfortable with and enjoy the hell out of it. Today's technology has made leaps and bounds improvements in the past 20 years from the time I got my first Darton Excel.
