Navy's coach doesn't think his players deserve unsportsmanlike penalties

I came across this gem in the post game recap. Navy and Air Force are pretty underrated teams each year. They really limit possessions because they control the ball so well. Navy nearly (and probably should have) beaten South Carolina this year. But I noticed during that game that Navy plays pretty dirty in my opinion; lots of questionable late hits and cheap hits and questionable low blocks/chop blocks.

And now, Navy's coach thinks they shouldn't get personal foul calls even after their QB mouthed off to 2 Air Force guys after a TD.

"Everything was going our way until the penalty." Niumatalolo said. "That is an unfortunate call to make in a hard-fought game. It is a service academy game with two teams who will be serving their country. It was a huge penalty; it changed everything. I hope those guys can sleep well tonight."

Is this guy joking?

While I appreciate the service these young men will provide for their country, they have to play by the same rules on the field. Anything to the contrary would be a disservice to their opponent and themselves as well.

If anything, future servicemen - and especially future officers - should both know better and be held to an even higher standard.

This time next year nobody involved will care. Hopefully that future ensign will build some character based on this.

Maybe I should join the United States navy and play video games all day because that's what normal guys do.

How about the whole story?

"officials flagged Proctor for unsportsmanlike conduct after he appeared to say something unkind to a Falcons defender in close proximity. "Some guy got in my way and I just told him to move explicitly," said Proctor."

Navy was saying use your judgment; we're not the frickin' U...he has a point. It's like the officials went out of their way...let it slide, it wasn't malicious or taunting.

Here's the other quote you left out:

"This is an emotional game. These guys know that coming in as a ref," Teich said. "You're reffing on CBS the Navy-Air Force game. There's no more emotion, you can't get any more psyched up about a game like that. You score a touchdown like that at the end, we'd fought back and worked so hard, it's disappointing. It's pitiful, really, it's pitiful."

The guy gets up, runs to an AF player, taps him on the shoulder and jumps around right in front of him. That's taunting.

Is there video of the play? I"m at work and can't stream anything but I looked for about 30 seconds last night and couldn't find anything. I may just suck at the internets though.

CBS showed a video close-up of the incident, but I've only been able to find bird's-eye view videos.

that;s probably because you don't have a vagina with sand in it.

Its a chicken shite rule. You have rules regarding play (holding, pass interference, off sides) or rules to protect player safety (late or out of bounds hits, facemasking). Celebration penalties are just stuffed shirt rules with questionable motives.

I hope the OP realizes there is a difference in a chop block and a cut block. In the type of offense that Navy uses the cut block is a huge part. They are legal and chop blocks are not. Huge difference in the two. As far as the taunting call, don't put yourself in a situation that even gives the ref this option.

Celebration, yes. Taunting, no. There's a big difference.

nope, both are extremely subjective and bother stuffy people.

You have no idea what was said to the Navy player or what he said.

Afterward, head referee Mike Defee told a pool reporter the penalty was called because Proctor "got in the face of an Air Force player right after the play." Proctor admitted to telling one of the Falcons "explicitly" to move out of his way, but did not feel the exchange warranted an unsportsmanlike conduct call.

That being said, there are certain instances when an official has the latitude to make a judgment call. This was absolutely one of those times. Whatever Proctor said to Davis did not give Navy an advantage over Air Force.

Let me take a moment to inform any reader who doesn't know that Air Force and Navy players were jawing back-and-forth the entire game.

Having watched the game closely from the press box and talked to several Navy players afterward, there were numerous times when an Air Force player "got in the face" of a Navy player or used foul language on the field and thus could have been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Bottom line, unsportsmanlike conduct or taunting penalties are always subjective and open to each official's interpretation.

"It's too critical a part of the game to make a call like that," Niumatalolo said. "You would hope that a referee, in that situation, would just say 'settle down guys.' Both teams are battling hard, and for someone to make a call like that, it hurts."

As a future officer in the USN I would expect the player to have teh intestinal fortitude and the wisdom not to put himself in a position to potentially harm his team. No second chances in wartime.

You play like you practice.
