That must have been a pretty badass line at Bastrop that year.
Who was the better player for Bastrop? Did we not recruit him because he didn't fit the scheme or because of grades?

When they were in 10th grade they also had K. Aubrey as their DE, and that may be the best front 4 I've seen in high school football. The offense had Mackey, Randle and Benton... crazy talented team

I watched them in the dome one of those years. It was when mackey couldn't start for some reason.(I think). Then the QB came in and caught fire. It was a while ago so I could be wrong. What year was this?

They did win 3 or 4 state championships in a row. They were ranked like #1 in the nation going in to RR's last year til he got hurt and they lost to evangel if i remember correctly

Won 3 state championships in a row. Had Josh Downs, Rueban Randle, Mackey at Ole Miss, Green at Ole Miss now the NFL, and one other lineman I can't remember his name. Awesome team. One lineman and Mackey always had grade problems, still does.

Mackey, D-Lo Benton, Randall, Downs, DD Jones, Kentravis Aubrey, Lamarcus Williams(Miss State), Jones's brother(southern miss). Marshay Green wasn't on those teams and never made it past the quarterfinals.

So why didn't we extend and offer to Jones? Was he an academic liability to the staff?
Posted on 9/26/11 at 11:13 am to ECOTIGER
No, he was a DE at the 'Strop. I think we looked and passed.

Yep, he was a DE. LSU chose Mingo instead.

no. My understanding is the team preferred other DT's over Jones. (Davenport/ Downs)

Wasn't he committed to Michigan most of the year before switching to Arkansas?

Yeah, I think so. I had forgotten about that. LSU didnt seem to show much interest.

we had brockers and logan projected as de. we were after mcfarland (signed w/oklahoma) and kid from michigan that singed with michigan. these 2 in addition to davenport, downs and akeem hicks.

quote:That is how Rivals and we as fans may have projected them, but not necessarily at all how the LSU staff projected them. We very rarely have DL that don't gain 25-30 pounds in their first couple years on campus. If a recruiting service lists a kid as a "Strongside DE" that is usually code for "He will put on some weight and be a three-technique in college."
we had brockers and logan projected as de.

I would have gladly substituted Jones for Akiem Hicks. FYI - It looks like DD on the back of his jersey, but it's actually DQ for DeQuinta.
