Where to eat? Never been to Charleston, or even S.C. for that matter. Give me a few suggestions that aren't too expensive. I'm a state employee who gets paid once a month, and most of that goes at the beginning.

It's hard to go wrong with restaurant selection in Charleston.

Hanks is very good especially if you like fried seafood but a little expensive. Fleet Landing is great, inexpensive, and on the water downtown.

From the ones in the link above: Virginia's on King, Coast, Cypress, Anson, Fleet Landing, Old Village Post House.

Red's at Shem Creek (Mt Pleasant) is a fun bar to visit. As is Rooftop bar on top of one of the hotels.

Breakfast: Hominy Grill.
Lunch: Justine's.

Expensive: Husk or Fig (couple of James Beard award winning chefs) are my favorites.

Last thing: do not for the love of God go to Hyman's Seafood.

Moved away about a year ago and very much miss the food. Enjoy your visit.

Lived there in the early 90's. Don't know what pricey is to you, but Poogan's Porch & Shem Creek Bar and Grill are two that come to mind. Both have web sites that can be quickly found thru a Google search.

Such a really nice southern coastal town, I'm sincerely jealous. Spent a few days there in 2003, I wanna go back. Great food, brew, and architecture.

Whether now surpassed or not, a trip to Hominy Grill is almost a quintessential low country tourist must. It's like a visit to Magnolia Grill, Acme, or Commander's.

You should still be able to get cheap lunch at SNOB (slightly north of broad) which is a pretty nice place. The express lunch is a set price of about 10 bucks. The others have given you a lot of other information but let me say that Charleston is one of my favorite cities in the country. I have been 4 times and even though my friends don't live there anymore I would love to go back.

The New Yorker has a long article this week about Sean Brock (of both McGrady's and Husk). Read it if you can. It has a long discussion of the obscure seed market in the south.

To give your pocket book a break, cross the bridge to Mt. Pleasant and hit up Red's Ice House on Shem Creek. Cool place with lots of eye candy. Andolinis Pizza has two slices and a PBR draft for $5 even. Pretty damn good. I used to hang out out at Madra Rua when I worked at FLETC. It is a great Irish bar in N. Charleston. This place is the real deal, owned by an Irish family, soccer on tv and decent food (worth the google seach and drive over.

My favorite nice places were Hanks, SNIB and FIG as mentioned. Agree with avoiding Hymans.
