Remember seeing him on an SI cover when I was a kid. Eugene was the center of the outdoor track world at that time, it seems.

The athlete that we had at LSU that would compare in relevance to their respective sport would have to be Pistol Pete.

Pistol

I met Steve on a casual basis a few times. Played pool with him a couple times. He dated a woman I knew. And yes I watched him run many times. He was a fun guy and maybe the toughest competitor I've EVER seen.

I was a sprinter when I ran track. The longest I ever ran in a meet was the 400 meter and I hated it. To see the pace he ran at blows my mind. I loved the movie about him but that video link of his highlights was awesome.

You'll love this one time before a big race he let the Register Guard publish his scheduled lap times in the paper two days "BEFORE" the race. Everyone in the stands had a copy. Well into the race he had a 58 scheduled and he turned a 56 the place went nuts and he just crushed the guy.

One of the greatest athletes of all time... He would still have records today if he would have lived 10 more years...

His most impressive time IMO is 6 miles in 26 minutes... Good God man

Weren't Mac Wilkins, Phil Knight and Russ Francis on that same Oregon track team? Wilkins held the WR in the discuss, Knight's a quadrillionaire and Francis a Pro Bowl TE...

LSU hosted the NCAA track & field meet in the early '70s. I got to see him and Dave Wottle, the premier miler, at that time.

This guy helped to shape a (my) generation. Great to take a look back. Domination + Humility = Hard to find today.
