Can any older Tiger fans reflect a bit more in detail on this game?

This was a game of epic proportions that proved LSU a contender from what I have been told.

It was my understanding that this LSU team as a major underdog in the contest would defeat a 9-0-1 Texas team going into the game. Texas would go on to win the National Championship the following season.

I don't think we were a major underdog. The Tigers were a top 10 team. The year before we went 10-1 (losing to Rice in game 1) were #4 and won the Orange Bowl over #7 Colorado by 2 plus touchdowns.
Going into the Cotton Bowl we were 8-1-1 beating #5 GA Tech and losing to #6 Ole Miss (a power back then)by a TD and tying nemesis Rice.
Texas was #4 and we were #7.
You might be thinking about the 1966 Cotton where we were 7-3 and unranked and beat #2 Arkansas 14-7 snapping a 22 game winning streak by the Hogs.

I might even have T-P clipping from the game somewhere, I was 12 and it was a big deal to see the Tigers on TV. I remember it was a 13-0 shutout and Stovall's last game as a Tiger.

I still remind my Longhorn fans of the result. I thing the 2004 Cotton Bowl was the next time we played them.
