I'm looking to choose an EPL team to pull for this coming season. I played soccer all the way through high school, but watched it rarely. I'm trying to pick a team and have it narrowed to two, based on playing style, skill, and other personal preferences. I like both Chelsea and Arsenal, so obviously I'll have to choose which I'll pull for before the season. I like just about everything about Arsenal and know that they have an at least decent following on the board, plus they aren't quite as much of a "bandwagon" team as Chelsea. I also like Chelsea, probably more than Arsenal, but their age scares me. What's everyone's opinion, and why?

since you have a playing history, you will probably enjoy watching the premier league without picking a team. if you like chelsea, choose them. they are older, but they have some interesting (ETA: younger) players, and i wouldn't put it past them to splash some serious cash depending upon abramovich's mood.

arsenal is always fun to watch. though, i would imagine that they could be kind of shitty to support. there are many arsenal fans on this forum that could go further with that.

I like Arsenal because I like financial responsibility. That said, being a gunners fan is really, really frustrating.

ETA: Also, I knew a guy whose brother captained the Arsenal reserves. Frank Simek. Look him up. He's the only American to ever play for Arsenal.

If you want to pick a club who's going to win trophies in the near future, go Chelsea.

If you want a club full of unfulfilled potential and some top-4 finishes, go Arsenal.

I've seen this. After keeping up with whats been going on for the past 2 weeks, it seems that Chelsea doesn't mind spending cash(even 50mil for Torres). I'm confused by Arsenal's financial responsibility, because it seems that there are areas lacking that they don't fill with talent even though I know that they have cash. That would frustrate the shite out of me.

Im an arsenal fan cus i was a huge dutch fan. Bergkamp is why i followed arsenal and have stuck with them ever since.

And you will really enjoy all epl games regardless if chelsea or arsenal are playing. Maybe follow the epl this year and just make ur decision later on. Maybe you will like other teams.

I had the exact same issue, and narrowed it down to these two teams, and Manchester City.
My thread

I eventually chose Arsenal.

ETA: Torres is one of the reasons I did not choose Chelsea actually.

Watch the Americans and cheer for them. You'll find a team quickly enough.

Aren't you a Chelsea fan?

I think that I'm going to stick with Chelsea, I like their power and that they have consistently performed well. What's your opinion Bho?

I am not so sure about that. Arsenal have a gigantic following because there are so many things attractive about them. Even though Manchester United is often likened to the Yankees, I consider Arsenal to be like the Red Sox. The Red Sox also generally spend money wisely, albeit a shite ton of cash, have great management, and they always have the potential to compete for the top.

liverpool is the red sox to manchester united's yankees, parallel unintentional. there's not a really great comparison to the red sox and yankees, though.

the yankees have far more historical success than manchester united has. manchester united has only fricking destroyed during the premier league era.

ETA: to op, since you are considering arsenal, you should have some knowledge of the invincibles

I see more the Man U-Yankees comparison in more terms of profit and popularity.

Also, I see why you pick Liverpool as the Red Sox because they have had greater success than Arsenal, but I consider the tactfulness of the front offices of the Red Sox and Arsenal with the combination of a lot of success, but nowhere near the top team.

Obviously, I am overlooking that Pool and Man U have a rivalry, but Liverpool is more like the St. Louis Cardinals to me.

All in all, the metaphors are meaningless, but fun. I guess my original point was saying that Arsenal is also kind of a bandwagon team. However, I do not really care if people choose to root for bandwagon teams or not. I cannot blame them for wanting to cheer on a winner. That is why I became a Wolves fan.

The drogba bighead and the arsenal comment threw me off. Anyway do you think that they still go after Modric or another midfielder after they signed Romeu?

I can only imagine that you are dynamite in the bedroom

OP: I wouldn't worry about Chelsea's age too much, they will reinvest, I'm interested to see who they bring in as a long term replacement for Lampard. Arsenal, when playing well, play some of the best football in the world, they have a cultural tendency towards stylish football and youth intergration (at the expense of big signings) and arguably this has cost them in the last 6 years as they've won precisely frick all. Their fans are known for being quiet. Chelsea used to have an amazing fanbase, but that's mellowed somewhat since their success and since the club (like most others) has begun chasing the richer folk.

Just toss a coin.
