I've heard this movie is underrated/pretty good from a few friends and I'm thinking about watching it. I've read the book, how close is it to the book (if you guys know)? What's the general consensus on this movie here?

I love the book, it's poetic and beautiful. The movie is dark and little hollow. It's an OK watch, but nothing too great.

One of the best book to film adaptations I've seen. You know how dark, grim, and 99% hopeless the book is...the movie's pretty much like that.

I tried twice...and I'll watch most anything...just found it not only depressing but monotonous. There seems to be no greater purpose to the movie beyond showing bleakness.

Any reason why? Did the book not translate well to a movie? Or was the movie just not done as well as it could have been?

^ ^ ^

but I will say that The Road is not a novel that can easily be made into a good film. You get way more out of the novel by reading it no matter how good a film on it would be.

Well, as a fan of the book, I'll probably give it a try. But

I agree with this, so I'll try to go in with low expectations.

Damn.

Just watched. What great acting performances by all involved, but this is definitely one of those "reality is better than feel good" movies, if you're okay with that. So damn well made, but happiness in the movie is rare and fleeting. I don't think I've ever respected a movie but almost hated watching it.

frick.

That kid. WTF? His acting. Was that a real kid or CGI? Incredible.

If anything, it's overhyped by a lot of people.

It's pretty silly.

The score and cinematogrophy are great, Viggo is as amazing as ever, but that's about it.

Not trying to be a dick, but your avatar is fricking Harry potter!

Nothing is more overhyped and silly as HP

It wasn't a bad adaptation, they just sped through some of the important parts in the movie (but that's cinema).

Harry Potter isn't a film about a post-apocalyptic world. Dumbass.

I don't think many people would call The Road silly. And who overhypes this movie? The only people that I have known to see it are on the board, and reviews are mixed at best.
