Best vacation with a 4 year old?

We are planning a spring family vacation for next year and are trying to think of fun places for us to go. It will be me, my husband and our 4 year old daughter. We went to Disney this year with my family so that's out the question. We were thinking San Antonio, Atlanta or Charleston...if we did Atlanta we would hit the Florida beaches on our way back for a couple of days. I need some suggestions if you've been to these places with a toddler or if you think of another place that would good.

Outside of Disney and beaches you have slim pickens....can't think of any reason to vacation in Atlanta except to see LSU football game, then get out of there quick!

at that age kids pretty much enjoy beaches and pools. maybe a zoo.....but if you're wanting a relaxing vacation, i'd park it at the beach for a week. you can take her fishing, crabbing, build sand castles, and lay back while she plays on her own. most other vacations are just a lot of work and not really a vacation for us

if you do atlanta you should go to their aquarium, its really neat.

Great Wolf Lodge wouldn't be a bad idea and not that far of a drive. LINK

San Diego has maybe the best zoo in the United States, IMO, if that's what you're looking for. My young brother and sisters, and they had a blast. Interactive zoo, great weather, and very relaxed city.

If you're deciding on whether a 4-year-old would have fun...Go to the Baton Rouge zoo and then to McDonald's....and then set up a sprinkler in the backyard while you BBQ and have a cool one.

Chicago is great for a child. The Field Museum is awesome and she will love riding around on the top a double deck bus on a city tour and even riding the trains to and from the city. Even though she is a girl, she might still love to see a cubs game, but I would skip the white sox game because it isn't in the best part of town for tourists.

Edit - I forgot to add the Children's musemum and the HUGE feris wheel on Navy Pier.

Plus for you there is always the miracle mile.

BTW we did this with our four year old boy and he LOVED every minute of the trip.

Lots for kids in San Antonio. Kids love Seaworld and riding in boats at the Riverwalk mall. A stop in New Braunfels would probably be a good move also.

We're looking at camping on the beach at Fort Pickens in Pensacola this November. The Blue Angels will be back in town somewhere around the 12th. You can sit on the beach and watch the airshow.

Chicago

This is a great suggestion. If you plan to go around late summer, there is also the Air & Water show, on the lake Michigan beach, which is fantastic. Even as a Yankees fan, the Cubs game is hard to beat.

Outside the Pacific NW, I've been to almost every big city. Chicago is most well rounded of them all, IMO. Maybe I'm biased though, because since last time I've went Chicago, last August, has become my favorite city.

Yeah she likes all sports...we take her the LSU baseball and football games a lot and she'll watch the whole time. That's why we thought of Atlanta because they have the Braves, a children's museum, the cabbage patch factory, Six Flags, Callaway Gardens, and some other stuff all around there.

For the people that said it's not a vacation with a 4 year old I disagree. We've had a lot of fun each year when we take her on vacation...went to the beach, Gatlinburg, and then this year Disney. Each trip was different because she was at a different age but we had a blast.

Honestly, I wouldn't spend a ton of money on anything at this age .. she won't remember it. She'll be happy somewhere where there is a pool (indoors if it's still cooler weather) and maybe a zoo or the like.

Just my complete 2 cents. Have fun wherever you go.

(and yes, I have kids now 19, 14, 10 1/2 = we really didn't do "much" other than the beach until 2009 when the Tigers went to Omaha ... that was freaking awesome!)

Yeah we weren't looking to spend a ton of money. That's why we were possibly looking into Atlanta because we have a place to stay there for a couple of nights for free. Also I would rather drive to places right now than fly. My parents only took us to the beach because my mom loved the beach so we were never able to go anywhere else for vacation. I told my husband that on our vacations we are going to do more than just the beach thing because I know how much as a child I wanted to do something else other than the beach every single year.

Don't worry about those people, we have been vacationing with our boys since they were about one year old. Our boys won't remember everything but we have lots of pictures and OUR memories of the trip.

On the Chicago trip I remember my 4 year old rocking the car(for lack of a better word) we were in on the huge Ferris wheel and I was scared to death because we were so high up. He won't remember it, but he was doing what a four year old boys do and rocking the hell out of the car.

This is the wheel so image one of those cars near the top swaying like crazy.

Chattanooga, Smokey Mts, Disney Land.

There is a place in or around Dallas that is an indoor water park. It is called Great Wolf, something like that.

How about a cruise?

LOL like you said typical 4 year old. Yeah I love the memories we have with our daughter on vacation even though she won't remember everything. The best though is this summer at Disney. My grandparents have taken every grandchild to Disney for their first trip. My grandparents are now 75 and 72 and they were able to make the trip and keep up with our daughter for their first great granddaughter's first trip. Granted my daughter might not remember everything from the trip but my grandparents have those memories and my daughter will have those memories in pictures.
