I have 8 acres and need a new mower. Would it be better to go with a tractor or a large commercial mower?

I used to sit my happy arse on a tractor for 8 hours cutting 6 acres, then I paid some guys to cut it with a commercial zero turn mower and they did it in 4. Size of the deck was about the same, but he could like 8 times faster than me on the tractor.

Don't piss your money away by buying a lawn tractor. Buy a farm tractor in the 30 hp range along with a bushhog and a finisher. If one keeps the grass cut, a tractor in this size should be able to cut your area in 4 hours or less.

Im my opinion it depends really.

you could get a zero turn and you could cut your grass pretty quickly. However all a zero turn does is cut grass. If you are new to living on acerage, you will soon find that you need a piece of equipment that does more than just cut grass.

I think Fishfighter's advice is dead on. I started on my place with a 30 hp Kubota with front end loader, bush hog, belly mower (finish mower that even the wife can use) and box blade.

You will be amazed at how much stuff you can get done with those implements. Leveling the yard/drive way, moving dirt, planting gardens etc... there is so much more option avaialble this way in my opinion it's a better choice than a zero turn.

Hire someone to bush hog it and get it under control and then get a zero turn. This is what I did. I cut 2.5 with a Dixie Chopper. I have friends with zero turn X-mark, and Kubota. All good choices.

Cheaper than cows and they will eat anything

My dad has 4 and they will turn thick woods into a park in less than a month.

If the acerage is where your home is I would go the mower route and I would recommend either a z-turn X-mark or Scagg mower. For me grass cut with a tractor doesn't look as nice as a mower

If the acerage is pasture or farm land then go the tractor route.

My Husquvarna LGT24K54 cuts as good as any push mower I've ever used, but that is a lot of acreage with a riding mower.

most people don't know about these but they are great for getting large open areas done quickly.
You can pull it behind anything.Behind a 4 wheeler works best.

Never ever mow a yard with a tractor! You will wear it out and it will cost you more money in the long run.

Buy both if you need a tractor if not a Zero turn is the way to and twice as fast as a tractor. Buy a good one too not the cheap ones.
