Guy takes 9500 for a gun estimated at 15-30k, probably worth more as Ricks boys lowball for their side take im sure.
He didnt look extremely desperate either.

Is it that hard or such a long process to sell antique stuff (guns or otherwise) on your own?

I've often wondered this. Why sell it for half it's worth when you could sell it for a lot more? I figure you could use the interwebz to sell just about anything.

Cause it's staged/scripted just like all the other "reality shows"

true Vegas is a big part of it

scripted

if its mostly staged (probable) they did a terrible job picking a pawn shop.
I imagine Vegas has more entertaining people running a similar operation... 2 fat dummies and a stoic geriatric, and Rick is meh.

True most of the time, but what I saw earlier was a gun from the 1800s.
Who flys to Vegas with that?
I guess it could have been his purpose for going to LV in the first place, or one of the reasons.

over analyzing

Old people love RV-ing. IN fact, I saw an old man try to sell his Coca-cola RV on the show.

thats pretty funny
the weirdest shite I saw was a guy pawn his 250,000 semi-truck.

kind of strange

Im sure its mostly staged, but that takes the fun out of it

In that case, Hardcore Pawn is a much better scripted show. Family drama+angry black people=win.

really all these people want quick cash

I think the estimated price that the experts give is not always indicative of what they could sell it for, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Plus, for some of these people, it may not be worth their time to try and sell it for a few thousand more. Also, the pawn shop people try and look sympathetic by telling them that they cant pay retail because then they wont make any profit.

The first tip that is is staged is that THE PAWN SHOP CALLS IN AN EXPERT AND TELLS THE CUSTOMER HOW MUCH HIS CRAP IS WORTH. This would be the dumbest thing a pawn shop could ever do. A guy comes in and thinks he's got some thing worth $400, but Rick calls in a history buff and tells him it's worth $3000 so now Rick pays him $1500. Why would any pawn shop do this? I mean it's a decent show but it's set up for TV.

American Pickers IMO shows more of what's probably close to their actual business.

They also call an expert to make sure what they are buying is legit. Otherwise, they're pissing money away when they try to re-sell something that is fake.

I Really liked the Guy that was given a storage room with a freaking original Shelby cobra chassis in it. Dude from Shelby north America or wherever says Its worth about 60k as it sits and he takes like 30k for it. You could put that on eBay and make more than that.

It is very hard to sell guns especially on your own. Unless you know someone willing to buy a gun it's almost impossible to get anywhere near what they are worth. The problem is people don't trust you. They will trust people if they buy from a store or auction. Stores pay you half and auctions pay you generally what they get up to -30%. Which could end up less than half. You can't sell guns on Ebay. Even if you could Ebay takes %15 and Paypal %10 plus you don't get anywhere near retail.

Guy insisted it was worth 50 grand and then was completely insulted by whatever RIck offered him.

And I love the guys that come in, the expert tells them their item will sell in the say $3500-$4000 range, and the seller asks for $4000 and gets all pissed when Rick hits him for at least half that.
