Portland wants ailing star Brandon Roy to retire for one NBA season so that they can pay him the majority of his contract while not taking a luxury tax hit for it.
I don't think this will end well because Roy's a fierce competitor and will absolutely refuse to sit on the sidelines for one year.

They can't even get him to sit for one game.

I'd like to see it happen in hopes of his knees just being able to be reasonably good for the next season...
If I were Roy, I'd do it. Take some time off...work out for a bit. Hopefully come back stronger.

There's no way he's going to willingly give up a max contract.
Considering how much he complained about his minutes this year and during the playoffs, it's clear that, in his mind at least, he still thinks he can play

This.
The only way I see both sides being happy is if the NBA brings back the "Allan Houston Rule" for contract amnesty as part of the CBA.
That would allow Portland to cut him and not take a luxury tax hit while letting Roy immediately sign with another team where he can be a major contributor.

I feel bad for Brandon Roy. He was a fantastic player, top 20 in the league when he was healthy. It is unfortunate that this happened to such a good dude.

I'm a Brandoy Roy fan. He's one of my favorite players. He really goes about things the right way. And I love his passion and fire.
But his knees are shot. And it depresses me to see a body betray a player like that.

Portland should have to pay every cent of the luxury tax. And they should be fined and lose draft picks just like Minnesota was when they attempted to skirt the rules with Joe smith.
They gave Roy a max deal when they knew it couldn't be insured because of existing knee conditions. Then they gave aldridge a max deal, broke the bank for Matthews, and took on Wallace's huge deal.
Allowing this would turn the owners' position into a joke in the cba negotiations

remember when a certain team signed darius miles to a long term deal and then told him to retire because his knees were shot. then this same team threatened nba teams for signging darius miles to a contract becasue they would be responsible for his long term contract.
hmmmm.... sounds like a pattern with the jailblazers.
