This is an ASTER image taken yesterday (the 18th) of the Spillway. Click the image to get a full resolution version.

Here are some comparison images, one from 1973 and the other when the spillway was closed.

To me, relative to the area size, the water has barely made a dent. I know this still affects many people, but from this map, its looks minimal SO FAR.

For a non-LA resident, how large is the area from the opening of the spillway between the two levees and Atchafalaya River is that in this picture?

Spillway to east Atchafalaya levee as the crow flies: 8.2 miles
Spillway to where this says the leading edge of the water is: 20 miles.

Spillway to end of east Atchafalaya levee: 25 miles.

Since a lot of the spillway is cypress swamps, you're not going to see a lot of open water. You'll see some where there was a cultivated field but for the most part you're just looking at the tops of cypress trees.
