With the exception of 1988, LSU made the NCAAT every year from 1985 through 2005. Prior to '85, I believe LSU's only NCAAT appearance was in 1975.
In 2006, LSU finished 8th in the SEC and upset #1 seed Alabama on the first day of the SECT. LSU lost the next two to be eliminated, but most considered LSU safe. However, Miss St AD Larry Templeton chaired the selection committee and Miss St got into the tournament despite not making the SECT. Laval was fired.
In 2007, Mainieri took over and LSU suffered its worst season since the conference expanded (29-26/12-17). That was good for 10th in the SEC. No SECT bid. No NCAAT bid.
LSU was bad the first half of 2008, but peaked in the 2nd half of 2008 through 2009 (despite losing home series to Illinois and Tennessee). Since the championship year, it has been a steady decline. It has been well documented here, but LSU is 7-25 in its last 32 regular season conference games.

quote:this should be considered unacceptable for a program of lsu's stature. if lsu doesn't make the post season, it will be the second time in five years under mainieri that the season has been a failure.

there can be arguements on whether he should/shouldn't be terminated. one thing is for certain, his superiors need let him know that another poor season will not be tolerated. if lsu doesn't improve enough to host a regional next year, a coaching change should be made.
