It's been said by some that the M&P is one of the finest ARs built. I have one, was reluctant to buy it because of S&W's lack of history with the platform, but it's been superb.

Some will say the Colt hands down because of the legacy. But, notice that one offered is a fixed carry handle model. Never gonna be able to get your EO tech on that, or, you'l have to put one of those silly carry handle mounts that places the optics really high up.

Because of the versatility of the S&W, the fact that it comes with a flip sight and carry handle, and the fact that I know it can hold its own against the Colt any day, I say the S&W is your best bet.

Consider yourself warned, though- S&W just launched a Sport model and I think you can get it for about $600 bucks. Some people claim they are crap- no forward assist, no dust cover, no chrome in the barrel. I bet they shoot fine, and if memory severs me right, the only reason chrome was spec'd in an AR barrel in the first place was b/c the military was trying to keep them from rusting.

Well assuming internally they are the same, no specs given, I would have to say M&P.

****AR Rule of Thumb #1: Never get an AR with a carry handle. No matter how cool you think it looks or how much you don't care at the time, at some point you will wish it wasn't there and you will want the flat top.****

ETA: Also notice these are .223 rifles not 5.56.

Of the two you listed I'd be more likely to buy the S&W. If for no other reason than for the flat top receiver.

I am by no means an expert, but I bought a S&W M&P 15 .556 flat top a couple of years ago and it is a fine reliable weapon that I highly recommend. I don't have any personal experience with a colt AR, but you shouldn't have a problem with either choice.

Thanks for all the replies. I have never owned a rifle built on an AR platform. Wanting something new to shoot. Anybody got a comment on those prices? Anybody know of a better deal?

There's a S&W sportsman on sale at Cabelas for under 700. I'll try to find the link.

ETA: LINK

$600.

I guess I'm in the minority here on liking the fixed carry handle. I love the classic CAR-15 look of my Bushmaster superlight with that carry handle and bushnell mp red dot sight on top.

If it was my choice I would go with the Colt

Not sure about S&W but Colt marks all civilian lowers as .223 but they have 5.56 barrels. That lower could be marked 12ga as long as the barrel is 5.56 you are good to go
