Gavin Cecchini to Ole Miss

This time a year ago, Gavin Cecchini thought his college destination was finalized. The Lake Charles, La., standout infielder was committed to LSU - just like his brother, Garin Cecchini, a 2010 shortstop that was just as highly touted. But when Garin Cecchini decided to sign with the Red Sox after being selected in the fourth round of the MLB Amateur Draft, things unraveled between the Tigers and the Cecchini family. Courtesy photo Gavin Cecchini visited Oxford, Miss., this past weekend and committed to the Rebels before returning home to Louisiana. Gavin Cecchini de-committed soon after, and following a wide search for a new destination, the 2012 elite prospect picked Ole Miss Sunday just as he completed a visit to Oxford, Miss. "I was sold right after the visit," Cecchini said. "You go to a lot of colleges and like the stadium or the coaches or the student body or the school, but at Ole Miss I liked everything. It's the perfect place to me. "It overwhelmed me and is the best place in the nation to play college baseball." Cecchini is rated a 10.0 on Perfect Game's 1-to-10 scale. Named an Under Armour All-American, the shortstop chose Ole Miss over Arkansas, Rice, Texas A&M, North Carolina, Arizona State, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Clemson and others. The Rebels' opportunity at Gavin Cecchini opened after Garin Cecchini signed for $1.31 million in August 2010. Garin Cecchini. The price tag was noteworthy, but it was less than what Garin Cecchini had originally set as his number -- reportedly somewhere near $1.75 million. "My brother signed for 1.31 million, and they didn't like that he came off his number," said Gavin Cecchini, who visited Oxford with his brother in 2009. "They said if he signed for less, then they'd take away my scholarship offer. They didn't do that, but they stopped contact and didn't invite me to any games or anything. They would have pulled it. "It ended up being the best thing for me. I don't want to go to a place I can't trust and can't rely on. I'm 100 percent sure Ole Miss is where I am supposed to play college baseball." But before Cecchini enrolls at Ole Miss, the Rebels will have to sidestep the 2012 Draft. Beginning with Chad Cooley in 1992, Barbe has had tremendous success with the Draft, and Cecchini will keep the streak intact. However, with the possibility of a hard slot system and the overall unpredictability of the Draft, Cecchini isn't focusing on that right now. A former Southeastern Conference coach told RebelGrove.com over the weekend that Cecchini could be a premier SEC shortstop as a high school junior. "I picked the college with every intention of being there," Cecchini said. "I'm not worried. They might implement a slotting system and decrease the bonuses. Anything can happen. My head is focused on being a Rebel, helping Ole Miss to the College World Series and winning a national championship."

he does realize who he just committed to right? Oh well, not like he was ever going to see a college game anyways

PM was none to happy when Garin took the money last summer and that probably played a part - if he suits up at Ole Miss I will be shocked

...I'm not liking what reading b/t the lines here says about our coaching staff ...

Agree.......I stated this concern before. Barbe has FOUR freshman starting for them as position players right now, and two others seeing varsity time. I hope we don't burn any recruiting bridges. YES, it is just one program, I understand, but it is one that year in and year out has solid college prospects that could help LSU.
Cecchini is projected to be drafted pretty high, it WILL be interesting to see if he ever plays college baseball.

it says, if you planning on using lsu to leverage your draft stock, then we don't want you. we want players who want to be at lsu.
p.m. has been played by z.v.r., the kid from s.t.m, the cecchini's, ect. and he's tired of it.
can't blame him, he's invested time and money into these kids based on their word and got nothing in return.
he wants players and families who keep their word. if you notice, p.m. was up front and said if they took a lower number then this is what will happen. why? because you never wanted to play for lsu in the first place. you used them. they were the one's who changed their word. let them use ole miss.

+1
Enjoy your stay in Oxford, if you make it there. I am sure you will take the money and run as well, even if on the low side.
I don't blame PM here if this is true. He is tired of these players making a commitment to LSU on a set price they are going to hold pat at then and then they drop there dollar amount and sign with the MLB team.

At the box I sit by a guy from Lake Charles, whose song played for Skip in the late 90's. Two weeks ago he told me that PM had basically quit recruiting Barbe because of the Cecchini situation last year. And then said Barbe kids would be likely headed to Ole Miss. I personally have no insight on recruiting at all, and I thought he was full of it when he said that, but this makes me wonder.
I can't imagine that PM would cut off an entire program, especially one like Barbe. I could however understand how a relationship with the family could turn south if he felt like they were dishonest with him though. Just very curious.

Who does this hurt? It hurts the kids, and it hurts LSU. This sounds like something between PM and one family, maybe two, one of whom happens to be Barbe's head coach.
I know Arkansas, Ole Miss, ULL, and several others have been recruiting Barbe hard as of late. I would imagine some of these Barbe kids grow up wanting to be Tigers and want a chance to go to LSU. Hopefully this does not become an issue.

He is full of it. Barbe produces too much talent to just ignore, not all of those guys are going to the MLB immediately. Gavin will take the money and run just like his brother. This isn't a loss to LSU at all. PM needs to make a stance because it is BS how these guys skullfrick LSU. No bridges are going to be burned at Barbe because those kids know LSU is the premiere Baseball program to be at right now. Especially if they want to get to the next level.

You guys know that Glenn Cecchini is also the head coach of the Barbe program and has been for a long time. He has a huge influence on the kids and on the parents. That won't make things any easier for PM.

Well that is a vital piece of information that I did not know

What a dumbass. Everything's fine with his decision, but don't say that when your family just blatantly lied about their intentions the year before with your brother.
I heard the program wasn't happy with Lee's decision either, but this kid actually signed for way over the number previously given to PM and the staff.
It all comes out in the wash. The leverage this family will gain from Ole Miss is about as significant as LSU's chances of making it 7 NC's this year.
You reap what you sow.

Mainieri is an arse, but he sees straight through that family's BS. They were only leveraging LSU to maximize Garin's signing bonus. They will do the same for Gavin. Let him tie up a major chunk of Ole Miss' scholarship money for the next year and a half.

This is definitely sending a message to future recruits.

Agree. Ole Miss just got another committment from Barbe's senior RHP, 6'4". Ole Miss starting CF is from Barbe too.
Got to get back in there and stop the bleeding.

i don't know, we still beat them 2 out of 3. they have yet to make it to omaha. meanwhile, we've been twice under p.m. with n.c.
we are still getting the better athletes usually.
