New Orleans regional and 2012 Final Four

So, I thought the purpose of having a regional in the city where the next years final four would be held was more-or-less a trial run for that next year....if this is the case then what is the point of having the regional in the New Orleans Arena and the Final Four in the Superdome?
I understand the Arena will seat much less than the dome and the final four will draw a lot more than the regional...but from what I understand the whole dome will be used next year with the raised floor in the middle, will the final four be the first time they even try this for the Superdome?

umm no they have had the final four there at least twice, Jordans freshmen year and the Fab 5 year. Also, cuse kansas which I went to. Are you asking specifically about the raised floor? I assume it has only been like that.
ETA: Actually yea they usually close off parts of the seats so they are gonna open up all seats and raise the middle? That is to much IMO.

I thought the raised floor in the huge stadiums were a new thing?
I know they've had a final four in New Orleans before, but I assumed it was set-up like the final fours in Atlanta that I've been to where they only used one endzone and had the curtain up with the risers on one sideline
but with the raised floor in the middle, they're able to sell out the entire stadium

yea I didn't realize they were trying to do that. I mean more people means more money but you could be extremely far away from the basketball floor.

yes, but in the New Orleans Arena whereas the Final Four next year will be in the Superdome---it seems like they would use a trial run with the floor in the middle, since I dont think it has been done before

that is how the dome was set up in Atlanta the year Florida beat Ohio St for the title when i was there...i won the "lottery" through the NCAA and my tickets said "distant view" so they put me in the 306/307 type section....so i'm all for the 2013 final four being in the middle of the dome if they are going to sell those upper level seats on the opposite end

I think it is just a rule now that all regionals are played in an arena not a dome. Don't think they are too worried about the trial run thing, but I could be wrong.
Also, I know it isn't New Orleans, but I am pretty sure Dallas did the NBA all-star game in the middile as well as UNC vs Texas in the middle. Both of which were last year

My only thing is that i find it odd that they have the regional in the arena and the final four in the superdome...just seems like they would use the middle floor idea for the superdome in the regional to make sure there are no issues

I can't stand the half-dome setup because the seats aren't angled properly, especially if you're on the risers. If you are in one corner and the ball is on the other half of the court, you can't see much at all. I haven't been to a game with a full dome setup, but I can't see the distance being a problem since I have watched football games from the upper deck plenty of times. I also think putting the students behind each basket is a good idea. They obviously can't fill 80,000 seats for every game, so I think NBA arenas are a good option for regionals.

I went to the 2003 Final Four & sat in the terrace. I was more on the sideline though. Not terrible, but we were high up. About halfway to the top. I would bet that raising the court & putting it in the middle of the floor would help this out somewhat.

Years ago when the Jazz played in the dome, they set the court to one side and rolled out the lower level bleachers from the far side...similar to the Atlanta set up. Used to go all the time and it wasn't too bad for viewing.

once the renovation is done, i believe the plaze seats wont roll anymore, i think they will be fixed. and in a straight line rather than the oval curve they have now

At the Nola final 4 with Melo and Kansas, they cut off half the dome like they do in a lot of places. I sat in the top corner of the free standing seating. It wasn't a terrible angle, but probably the worst of those seats.
I believe the one with the Fab 5 had the entire dome used. I was young when I went though and remember more about Weber's timeout than the seating setup used.
I wouldn't worry about New Orleans needing a trial run for a major sporting event. Between super bowls, final 4's, and sugar bowls, the city and superdome know how to put on a major event.

I was there, and I don't remember that at all!
It looked pretty damn full to me, all the way around - at least what I remember from looking in a pair of binoculars way the hell up in the terrace.

I mean this is New Orleans *NOT* Dallas. The Superdome will do fine. Also, who's to say they won't have a game or two in the dome next year.
