New Interent Service-Specs, Service,Etc

I am moving to a new house in the next few days and am looking at internet options. I currently have Cox Cable internet. I have scheduled for them to install over the weekend. I have done some research after setting up appt and have several questions.
1-Att DSL(cheaper)-they are offering 6MPS service. They said they will send equipment($75 or $100 w/ built in router) in 5-7 days. i don't want to wait that long. Can I buy a modem elsewhere and hook it up myself over the weekend. If so what specs or things do I need to consider
2- I run a linksys wireless router with cable connection now. its works well for all internet uses. How will the DSL fare compared to the cable
3-Another issue is the new house is much bigger and 2 stories. I have heard of issues with poor signal strength in 2 level.
Sorry for the novel-help needed. Thanks for advice!!!

not much if any speed difference between DSL and Cable.

At my parents there is a wireless router, pretty big two story house no issues at all with poor signal strength.

ATT is fixing to put a limit on there internet usage. You get a set limit of GB bandwidth and if you go over it you get charged more. Just an FYI.

For home Internet??
I have heard that for cellphones/ mobile devices

Yup. I have U-verse and they are talking about putting a 600 GB limit on my home internet usage.. that's a hell of a lot but still the principle is gay.

How much internet usage does 600GB cover. I game a good bit and both the wife and I work out of the home office a fair amount

Gaming uses very little bandwidth.
Streaming video and large downloads are what uses bandwidth

hmmm....
that's a tough one.
if you're comfortable with what you have now then don't bother. there are a lot of things that factor into DSL tho.
DSL speed is varies largely depending on your location. If you are using a DSL modem right next to a central office or nowadays fiber optic line, then you can expect very fast speeds. But if you live in a rural area or far from the central office, DSL speeds can slow to almost dial-up di-dit-dit-di-dit AOL speed.
for example:
i'm fortunate to live a block from the main fiber optic line running through dowtown Houston. My shite is blazing with a 12mb connection. I get host quite a bit once BLOPS drops the starting host.
my parents on the other hand live out in Central back home in BR. They have a 6mb connection and are pretty far from the central office i would guess. So, I just about yellow bar everytime I bring my xbox home and play online.
if it's AT&T U-verse you have an opportunity to get. I would go in head first. I have had U-verse for almost 3 years now. Service is amazing. I never lose connection, get dropped, the network never goes down.
whenever I move apartments I always always shcedule them on my move date a month a head of time. I ain't playing games when it comes to my internet and tv.
eta: all you need for good gaming as far as internet goes is a good ping. check what you can get now using a laptop. any ping less than 60-75 is good. anymore and go AT&T fo sho.

I am directed man. I was under impression I could get the AT&T uverse Internet. The fastest speed they are offering is 6mps. Will I be ok with that??
Posted on 3/17/11 at 2:36 pm to BirdDawg
yes. that's plenty enough bandwidth to play online. just depends on your ping.

THIS.
It is all about ping.
A 128k connectionwith good ping >>>>> than a 50mb with bad ping for gaming

6 mbps will SUCK for gaming. I have Charter and average 12, i still want to upgrade to 18 or 25.

12mb or 25mb, doesn't matter.
as stated before, it doesn't matter how many mb's you have. what matters is your ping time for online gaming.

You're exaggerating a good bit there, but basically. Gaming doesn't use that much bandwidth. 3mbps+ and you're golden.

I hardwired the PS3, currently pinging in the low 30's down from the high 80's on wireless.

Check into a business setup then. Most offer unlimited for business. It cost a bit more, but that's it.

hardwiring will always get you a better ping. while wireless technology has come along way, hardwiring for multiplayer games is still the way to go.
main thing to remember is bandwith and ping aren't mutually exclusive to each other.
for a break down on why ping is more important than overall bandwidth/connection:
in multi-player games, the game server notes the time it requires for a game/data packet to reach a client(your console) and a response to be received.
This round-trip time is usually reported as the player's 'ping'. It is used as an effective measurement of the player's latency, with lower ping times being more desirable.
IT/Networking/Servers are my thing.
