Buy them as early as you can.

Bought my airline tickets to San Fran about a month back, checked the same tickets yesterday and the price went up $175 per ticket.

Fuel prices on the rise!!

It's getting ridiculous. I read something last week that said all of last year there were 3 price increases and so far this year there has already been 4.

Its a crapshoot. SIL (no pics, you don't want them) priced some for late Jan around Christmas, from a Phil to N.O. Decided to postpone trip due to the cost. Checked again 2nd week of Jan and the cost was 135 cheaper. Price was even cheaper to fly into BTR.

I don't think that is the best idea. I've found that the prices are the lowest 3-4 weeks before the flights.

What days are you flying?

I've always heard the general rule is to buy plane tickets at least 3 weeks before your flying dates. Within 3 weeks is when the prices start to increase on a regular basis.

higher cost of fuel typically results in higher airfare prices

If you wait till 3-4 weeks out, they may never go down. If you book early you can switch to the lower fares and receive an airline credit.

Book as early as you can and keep checking to see if prices have been dropped.

re: Airline tickets online

•Determine where your preferred airline's home office is located.

•2
Find out the time zone for its home office's location.

•3
Log on to the airline's website shortly after 12am (in the airline's time zone) on Wednesday night. This is the best day and time of the week to book a flight because this is when most airlines purge their computerized systems of any airline reservations that were not booked.

•4
Keep in mind that these are generally affordable tickets, so if you can manage to log on at that time, you can possibly book a flight and get a good deal.

•5
Find cheap airline reservations by booking your flight on Thursday night if you're traveling on the weekend. Most airlines release their weekend specials on Thursday evening.

re: Airline tickets online

Ticket prices change at 12:01 AM (usually ET) Tuesday morning.

Prices increase significantly once you cross the 21 day threshold to flying.

I fly 4 or 5 times a year for leisure (and I'm not an OT balla, so I have to watch how much it costs....)

Some things you need to do:
- Decide where you would LIKE to go during the year, and roughly what time of year.
- Sign up for all of the budget airlines' (Frontier, Southwest, AirTran, JetBlue) email alerts.
- Be prepared to purchase the tickets the day you get the email. We have a "travel" credit card, that is used only for plane tickets, etc. that we keep paid off and ready to roll at any time.
- Familiarize yourself with what airlines go where, and what it generally costs. That way, you'll know if you get a good deal.
- Don't forget to check airports within an hour of where you live. Baton Rouge has three: BTR, NO, and Laffy.

Example: We're flying into Baltimore on Wednesday, to visit some folks in the greater Northeast. I got an AirTran email back in December that had great prices with a 48 hour window to purchase the tickets. Our non-stop flights from New Orleans to Baltimore are less than $150 each, round trip.

I probably haven't paid more than $300 per seat to fly in the last 5 years.

ETA: So, it's either 12:01 AM Tuesday or Wednesday. I've always used Tuesday.

Anyway, another point... avoid flying on Sunday, Monday and Friday. That's when people fly most often for business, and the airlines know this. You can save a lot of money by changing either your departure date or return date by a day.

Also, get to the airport early. If your flight is full, and they look for volunteers to fly later, offer to do so (if you don't have anything pressing to do) if AND ONLY IF, they offer a free round trip ticket for you. Screw a dollar amount voucher, if you bump voluntarily, 9 times out of 10 they'll give you a free trip.
