Wonder what this years excuse will be for high prices. Every year it is something.
Having crawfished my dads land for 3 years I can tell you, the costs of gas, bait, sacks sucks when you only catch 1/10 of your normal catch because of cold weather.
Theres no conspiracy, but no one wants to go out and work for free so your life can be a little more convenient.

not saying work for free. Just every year it is either too cold, too hot, too dry, too wet, something. Making a living is one thing but now days everyone wants that high def TV and fancy 40k truck. High prices has to support the American dream I guess.

Either way, I can't wait till season. I contribute my share every year of buying them, so who am I to complain.

Another reason you will never see prices as low as they were 20 years ago is because they are being distributed farther away from Louisiana. It wasn't long ago you couldn't find a live crawfish in Dallas, Atlanta, etc. and now they are everywhere.

I buy spillway crawfish for $15-$20 a sack (~35lb) after Easter every year. Easter is the key here.... Prices NEVER go down before Easter.
On a side note, there is absolutely no water in the basin right now and it it came up today it would still be a month before we benefited from it. We need some water bad!!!!

Yeah, but the people who eat those are gonna be buying all the pond crawfish.

I absolutely expect high prices this year.

Are you buying $15 crawfish directly from a fisherman or is that retail? Not everyone has connections and I don't remember retail being .50 a pound in a long time.

there's still a ton of snow in the Ohio valley. My buddy said they had over 2' of snow/ice just sitting around everywhere. Said it hasn't gotten over 30 degrees in a LONG time (months). We will get the water eventually. Hopefully before next months full moon (so those big fish aren't so vulnerable)

I am hoping this melts slowly and doesn't cause the river to get too high. We have a camp on Old River and weren't able to get to it until August of last year because of the high water.

But I do agree with you. For the Spillway fishery, the water needs to start rising.

yeah. Try to always buy from the fisherman when I can. (usually on the way back to the landing from fishing) hell, my neighbor was trying to give us sacks on Sundays two years ago... We would just give him $20 for his troubles but like I said, this is after Easter... Usually into May. And if the water stays up, we usually get a new
crop each month so they can be good into June, even July. But we usually start getting tired of them and switch to crabs when they start running in the river

Old River
big stringer caught out of there two weekends ago. 5 fish - 22lbs with an 8lber. I've never fished it before but apparently it's great at certain river stages

This will be another factor into the high prices this year.

I agree ...we had some deepwater crawfish in one of our cuts ..i hated them and so did everyone else around here.
My ponds always had fresh water and thats the key to keeping the shells soft come summer.
But with the high price of diesel no one will do that. When I crawfished it was .99 a gallon.

Not sure I agree with this. What makes basin crawfish no good?

Prices right now should be around $3.50-3.75/lb at seafood markets/retails. Hopefully they will drop quick with this warmer weather.

They won't drop by much until after Mardi Gras.

I'd expect to pay 3.75 retail if you can even find them by March 5th but mostly in major cities it will be the boiled only option.
