From ESPN.com NBA Rumors - "The Nets are expected to move Murphy before the Feb. 24 trade deadline. They would like another expiring contract for him, but would be willing to take a younger player with potential who has another year on his deal."

Whenever I see the availablility of an intruiging player fly across the ESPN rumors section, the first thing I do is decide if the Hornets could use him. Next, I look at whether or not the Hornets could put together a reasonable package to trade for him. In the case of the player I'm about to present, the answer is "absolutely yes" to the first question, and "possibly" to the second question (without having to move Thornton), but why not dream? I put together a trade that I think the Nets would at least entertain (centered around the potential Q-Pon and Belinelli since both are under 25 years old, all other players are just to make salaries work). You guys think we should make a push for Murphy?

Potential Troy Murphy trade

Analysis

I don't like giving up Anderson and Q-Pon. Both provide decent depth at positions of need.

I still think he'll get bought out. His contract is pretty damn big to trade for considering he'd be a backup on most teams that'd be interested in him. No one bites, he's persona non grata with the coach, a losing team saves a few million by buying him out and Murphy can sign with a contender. That rumor was probably fed to ESPN direct from the GM. They'd love to get some value for him.

Understandable, but Murphy provides an upgrade in depth over Andersen (he's 6'11 just like Andersen, he's no worse of an option at center). As for Q-Pon, it just doesn't seem like he's going to be much of a factor for us this season; his PER is one of the worst in the NBA.

Even if he wouldn't start for the league's best teams, it's an expiring deal, and his average PER in the prior two seasons was about 18. For comparison, David West's PER over the same time frame is 19. Not too much difference. Of course, there is still a good chance he ends up getting bought out, but it may be in the Hornets' best interest to make a deal for him so he can't go to whatever team he wants.

I'd give these guys up in a heartbeat for a good player.
I don't think Q will amount to all that much. Maybe he just needs time, but I'm not seeing quality NBA play from him.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. I do think, however, that a young and growing team would definitely take a chance on him, much like Toronto did with JuJu.

We should stick with QPon. Very athletic but not all out of control like Juju was, and he's shown that he can hit the 3. In two years, I think he can come off the bench and provide ~80% of what Ariza can, which would be great.

Unfortunately, we don't have two years; not if we want to keep CP3, anyway. Also, he may be 80% of what Ariza brings at that time on offense (not saying much), but he's nowhere near Ariza's level on defense.

This was my initial assessment.
But the more I see of him the more I think the NBA is just way above him. He just looks like he doesn't have "it". Hard for me to describe, but somewhat similar to JuJu I suppose. A guy that I don't expect to see much improvement or change.

Do people actually think Murphy will help us win a title this season? Would he resign for nothing?

I don't think you give up QPon for Murphy unless it provides immediate success or future success. If you give up QPon and Murphy leaves after the season where are we at now? We would have no back up for Ariza and no first round pick.

Green and Buckets are both expiring contracts.

I would just think we would need to keep him since he is young cheap talent unless we will get back a guy with a longer contract.

FWIW, Murphy is not going to get anywhere close to the same type of contract he has now again.

Would be badass if we could get him. He would really improve our team.

Make it Murphy and Stephen Graham for Banks, Belinelli, Banks, QPon and nearly a million in a trade exception.

Murphy can REBOUND. When Okafor went out you now see how much this team struggles to rebound the ball without him. He also has a great shot and could be deadly in some pick and pops just like David.

You can play him and David on the floor at the same time as well.

I have to admit, it's sounding better. I think Q Pon could contribute at some point, but Murphy could help now and in FA.

I really don't wanna give up Q just Troy Murphy, but we could always give andersen and marcus banks and run a bench with smith at the 4 and murphy at the 5
