Is beef fat, on a percentage basis, any worse for your body than chicken or turkey fat ?? I had open heart surgery in November, and have been watching my fat and sodium intake.

Thanks in advance

I think fat grams are fat grams are fat grams in meats. Some meats are leaner than others and have less saturated fat, but I don't think the fats themselves are different.

Bumping this in case someone else has some guidance.

Thanks Gris, I think the same, but would like some of the experts to give some answers.

Fat is fat. Saturated fat is saturated fat. Cholesterol is cholesterol. Whether it's in a steak, chicken, turkey or a chocolate pie. It's all the same.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. I just got off of a self imposed low fat, low cholesterol diet myself. Dropped my cholesterol 80 points in only 4 months.

The key is to avoid the fats of any of those meats and buy the leaner proteins.

There aren't differing levels of sat fats. They are what they are. Chicken skin fat is the same as beef fat.

Fat is fat. Saturated fat is saturated fat.

Doesn't the second sentence sort of invalidate the first one? I mean if fat is fat then why are you talking about saturated fat. The fact is there are several different types of fats and it's a legit question.

You guys know what I mean. On a nutrition label:

fat 10 grams
saturated fat 3 grams
polyunsaturated fat 1 gram

It doesn't matter what type of food this nutrition label is on. It could be meat or a chocolate pie. Now different types of food obviously has different amount of fats and cholesterol. That's not what he was asking.

That's what I understood as well. I thought he was asking if there's a difference between 1 gram fat in beef versus 1 gram fat of chicken or turkey. Is the one gram in chicken not as bad as the 1 gram in the beef? That's what I got from the question. Obviously, different foods have differing amounts.

I can appreciate what you're saying. Good for you losing the weight. You're obviously doing something right. It's darn hard to give up foods you love. Darn hard.

I'll tell you what I ate for 4 months:

Baked chicken without the skin. McCormick's has tons of seasonings that makes it taste really good. Baked fish. Grilled tuna. Tons of veggies. Whole wheat everything. I even cut up wheat tortillas, put them in the oven and made low fat tortilla chips. Salsa with everything. Refried beans. Turkey sandwiches. Fat free mayo, cheese, and ranch. Big salads. I gave myself 2 cheat meals a week to keep my sanity. Cholesterol dropped 26%.

Correct, but if you'll look at the chart I posted, it lists the percentages of different types of fats. Now, it's been a long time since I took organic chemistry, but if I remember correctly, mono-, poly- and un-saturated fats refers to the length and type of lipid chain that makes up the fat. Chain length and saturation affects the way the body breaks down and stores the fat.

3 grams of mono in chicken is the same as 3 grams of mono is beef. 3 grams of poly in cake is the same as 3 grams of poly in cheese. That was his question.

GB, you're above my head now and if a gram of chicken saturated fat is not as bad for example as a gram of beef saturated fat, I stand corrected and apologize for any misinformation.

I know there are good fats in avocados so I eat a lot of them. Please don't tell me I'm wrong!

Come to think of it, isn't the OP the same guy who posted a few days ago about cooking venison wrapped around cream cheese and some kind of pork sausage? Something like that I believe. If not, I apologize. If so, dude I hope that was a once in a great while cheat meal or something.
