Lab training...

I have a 12 week old black lab female and just started looking for training options in the MS/LA area.
Any recommendations? And how long will she likely be gone, and what can I expect as far as $?
ETA: I really won't have time to train her myself because I will be studying for the bar.
Thanks.

Good luck on the bar. No idea about training a lab but I can give you advice on how to train a wiener dog.

What do you want her trained for? Obedience? Duck hunting?

I don't know a whole lot about training a lab to duck hunt but my best friend had a female lab who he trained every single day for duck hunting (named Dixie) and before he could get her out on the water, she was hit by a car. I loved the shite outta that dog.

Call Jay Dufour 225-936-4013 He trains Labs for Duck hunting and blood trailing. Around $500 a month. Great trainer!

I just talked to Jay - these are the details.
He has 2 programs - the first would consist of obedience training, steady to shot, deliver to hand, double retrieves, etc. Good dog for 1/2 hunters and where she can see the ducks fall.
The second would be an advanced training. This would consist of blind retrieving and whistle training.
I'm not sure about the price on the second, but the first program is a four month stint at $500/month.
He seemed like a nice guy. My problem is getting my wife to let me send her for 4 months - shite.

Then get your wife to train the dog, save you 500 a month.

Roma, what can you tell me about Steve at bear creek?

No question they are great people and bred some incredible dogs, but I have experienced and heard about some horror stories. Steve is an incredible trainer, but only trains one way. If your dog needs a softer touch Steve isn't the guy. He is quick to shock your dog. I understand why he does this, but some dogs need more attention rather than being ground down.
My suggestion would be to talk to several trainers. See if they use the collar or not. I would be looking for one that doesn't use it. If used improperly, and too much, it will ruin an otherwise fine retriever.
Also, talk to the trainers and see how much emphasis they put on field trials vs. hunting. Its very similar, but not the same.
Its 12 weeks old - WOW, I don't envy you. Finally both of mine have gotten out of the "puppy" out of them.
Oh yeah, Steve is going to be in the same neighborhood of $500 a month.

I don't know if I'd go that far. They are for trainers that train lots of dogs. Like I said, it works great for some dogs, other dogs respond negatively. I will never use one or use a trainer that uses one again.

When you have several dogs, you need quick results. The collar gives you this. Never have used one either, and want. Thats just the way I see it. Plus you have to keep the damn collar on them all the time. They should be banned along with robo ducks.

that is not true - not if the collar is used properly

collars are for training one or two dogs too...
don't know how to reasonably snake proof a dog without a collar....

supposedly there are collars out there that just give a good vibration instead of an actual shock.
apparently these work will too, but i imagine since its more of an annoyance than a painful shock, the dog might not always respond to it
