Saints Sign New Defensive Tackle Tom Johnson

Defensive tackle Tom Johnson, a West Division all-star last season, has come to terms on a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints, a deal that with his signing bonus could be worth up to $1.8 million US, said his agent Bardia Ghahremani.
“New Orleans just put the best deal together,” said Ghahremani, adding that the Minnesota Vikings were the other serious contender for Johnson’s services. “They were willing to work with him, they wanted him bad. (Saints head coach) Sean Payton called me, Tom met with everybody from the head coach, the (defensive) co-ordinator, the D-line coach — they treated him like, ‘hey, look, you’re one of us. We want you here.’ ”
The 26-year-old Southern Mississippi product was a force in the middle for the Stamps this season, his first as a full-time player in the Canadian Football League.
It’ll be the second crack at the NFL for the six-foot-three, 293-pounder. He went to training camp with the Indianapolis Colts twice, in 2006 and 2007 before moving to Europe to suit up with the Cologne Centurions in Germany.
He also spent time in the Arena Football League before signing with the Stampeders.

Give it to our front office in figuring how to best stay ahead of the cba game. For a $mil+ they are serious about him. This is no camp fodder move.

39 tackles and 4 sacks this past season
So I wonder if they still are looking for a DT early in the draft.
I really think we need to add OT to our draft needs early in the draft.

If true there could not be a better barometer IMO for his talent. Say what you will about the vikings but they sure seem to know good D-line talent.

don't we have one already in charles brown? To take bushrods spot? We need defense way worse than offense this year. and we need defense all across the front 7. hopefully this DT we signed is not just a band aid but a guy who can help our D line dominate next to sedrick. now we need a DE pass rusher. we also need TWO olb's. if we only get one OLB we better pray casillas can come back healthy and be better than shanle and fujita were. maybe even a safety also in case we dump harper or he walks.

good point. minny does have one of the best D lines in the NFL. and good talent evaluation there as well.

He's Brees bodyguard when he's not playing football, right?

Brees should use this tree.

The Saints truly never "let him go", it was all roster moves and this and that, never did they want to rid themselves of canfield's enormous talent. Canfield was a long term developmental prospect. He'll be kicking Daniel's arse in no time.
