Can we build a good program with justjunior college players? One of my friend claims that the juco route can build good team but not program. I counter that alot of the good program recruit one and done players which is almost the same as recruiting juco as they are not staying long term.
Can our basketball program improved if we go heavy on Juco players year after year. Let's not forget, some of these juco are probably top recruits that did not qualify academically to attend their respective schools.
What do you guys think?

This is the truth.....

There are many top prospects in JUCO. Marcus Thornton was one. If TJ after yesterday doesn't see our talent level compared to KU's was like men among boys we are in trouble.

I think a program needs to find a balance of both. There is no difference between a JUCO and a transfer. LSU has gotten some seriously talented players from JUCOS: Thornton, Lloreda, and Roland. I hope TJ isn't as silly as some Rant posters who refuse to recognize the merits of JUCO players.

the situation just has to be right. we almost took brad reese 2 years ago but that is a long story. starting over from scratch its a good idea to lay a foundation of guys who will be here for 4 years. if there's a guy who can be added to the equation and impact this team in a positive way who just happens to be a junior college player then you try and bring him in. i dont think too many people on here 'refuse to recognize the merits' of a juco player, especially not myself.

For the most part I'd say no.
Brady went the JUCO route alot, especially early to try to win fast as Dale left no talent, and because of the restrictions due to the probation.
Thing with JUCO is that they are in junior college for a reason, and many times not for good reasons.
You're rolling the dice and only getting two years.
I think Jabari Smith was a success story but he was very inconsistent his first year, much better his second.
Other than that, alot of misses. Dejaun Collins kicked off the team halfway through his first year. Kedrick Brown goes pro right out of high schoo.
The JUCO from Utah that got in trouble with the law and we had to rescind schollie, which we used for Tyrus.
Thomas Davis...rarely played. Lamont Roland, got hurt midway through his senior year, but gave us a good junior year.
I'm missing a few but you can see it's hit or miss, with more misses and less time to develop an help.
I'd just as soon not get any, but I would have made an exception last year. We needed immediate help right away.

One college coach explained it to me like this.
"When you look at a HS senior you're evaluating how good he might become. When you look at a Juco player you have to remind yourself 'this is as good as he gets.' If that's good enough to play for you then you take him."

I think juco players should be used as we do in football -- strictly to fill in where there is a gap in depth. They should never be a foundation of your program.

Also, they are at a JUCO because of grade issues or conduct or both. You see that guy at State. What a talent but what a headache. Jaime Lloreda fit that description. He really had no buisiness in college and was a bad person, but he could ball.

Are you talking about Sidney, because, he came straight out of high school.

I was, so I stand correct c. But he fitss the JUCO profile and should've gone to JUCO cause I doubt he makes it through this year in Starkeville.
Lloreda is an appropriate example. Dude played harder than any player I've ever seen, but man what a headache the whole time he was here.

I would take a good juco PG right now w/o question, preferably 6'2 that can get in the lane, create, ake FTs & defend. Stringer is a liability when he constantly chicks up 35 footers as if they were layups. I know kid has range, but he's closer to halfcourt than the 3 pt line on some of those!

At this point in time right now I would reluctantly agree.
Unless String works his tail off in the off-season and improves his ball handling significantly along with his footwork on defense we'll still be deficient at the most important position on the court.

I've been saying we need a juco point guard for a while. I think we will have a good team next year, but PG will be a weakness as it stands now.

That is selective analysis.
The following Brady JUCO signees had positive careers at LSU.
Marcus Thornton SEC Player of the Year 2009
Jabari Smith All SEC & starter on Sweet 16 team
Lamont Roland starter on All SEC team
Willie Green Leading 2nd leading scorer in 1998
Jaime Lloreda All SEC & starter on NCAA team
Dejuan Collins was a productiv PG until he broke Brian Beshara' s nose in afight
Thomas Davis couldn't break in with Lloreda, Brandon Bass, & Ronald Dupree ahead of him
Quenton Thornton was key backup on SEC title team
I am not advocating a whole team of JUCOs but they can help provide short term help. The good players far exceed the ones who did not work ou as well

Davis was never on the team at the same time as Bass

LSU played Kentucky, not Kansas.

Ok. Then he could not beat out Dupree, Lloreda and Beshara for a starting spot. I believe he also had some injuries

doesn't sound like a very positive career to me....
